Lone Wolf is good. The bidding sometimes gets furious though.

Some of the others might disagree.

OK, all of the others.

Alright, me too.

5 Vegas sucks. You'll catch on. Welcome aboard.

Newbie hint #1. Watch the bids first. If you see something that starts at $1 and closes $1 there's a reason.

Hint #2: Watch out for those eager to give you advice on which cigars to stay away from - I'm guessing you'll find the initials "LT" on some 5 Vegas! Now you can trust me - if you like a really tasty, full-bodied maduro cigar, you'll definitely want to stay away from the La Gloria Cubanas. I think I read CA gave them a 75, or maybe a 57, saying they were just nasty. :)

I remember my Dad and his brothers smoking cigars. It was a big-city luxury for farm boys who were used to chewing sugar cane stalks and smoking corn silk. I try to duplicate the taste and smell of those memories. You'll find most of those on this forum have tried a whole raft of brands and know what they're talking about. But you need to use your own tastes rather than row a boat some else is steering. Remember, this is an auction...it can get very competitive.

Welcome, relatively new cig(ar) smoker wondering if anyone had any suggested brands to try ...

Actually, long tradition here requires that YOU provide each of US with a cigar to try. We then form our individual judgements of YOU, based on how well WE each like the cigar you provided. NOTE that speaking for myself, I prefer full-bodied maduros as a rule, but am willing to try 'most anything (except flavored cigars, which you may rest assured that I will never be the one to outbid you on any you may try to buy).

As for what YOU should try ... 'as many as humanly possible' is the best answer I can give you. No matter what ANYone else says, you will only know what YOU like by putting a match to one and puffing on the smoke from it's fire ... you will find that aging causes cigars to take on new and different qualities and the general advise is that unless you have one hell of a good memory, to make notes about different cigars as they age in your humidor.

I've found that no matter how good one tastes out of the box today, it will be different and almost always better with at least 3 weeks of age on it, then different and almost always better yet after 3 months. I'm told that process continues until it's aged for years, but in all candor, I have insufficient self-discipline to have ever let one age more than a year, so cannot speak with any authority.

Hey, here's a thought ... how 'bout if you find a REALLY good cigar, preferably a full-bodied maduro, then age it for two or three years and send it to me, OK? That'd work ...

Hey newbee, welcome to cigardom. My advise to you is to get some of the nice samplers that CI offers. Great way to experience many different tastes without buying a bunch..I noticed in the sampler section an auction for El Cheapo's. Buy one of those and you'll know which cheapies suck and which ones are gems (there are a few, but to each their own). I like any decent cigar that burns well, which pretty much includes them all.

Don't know who convinced the newbie that 5 Vegas suck, but that is one less bidder on the 5 Vegas, now let's work on La Gloria, Hojo de Monterrey, Partagas and a few more...............Charlie

I'd like to send out a warm welcome to StogeeBoy, only it would probably be misconstrued as some sort of sexual innuendo by the chastely minds that occupy this space so I'll just say hello instead.

And StogeeBoy, if you want to be accepted and taken seriously here...don't acknowledge anything I say. Let this be the only post of mine that you read....other than that, have fun...wait, that's not allowed either...just go lite up whatever is handy and you'll fit right in.

Hopefully you are a grown man who can appreciate e-chick's sexuality and recognize irony and innuendo when you read it.......enjoy!

Lit end out. LOL. Experiment with the 5 packs and samplers until you start to narrow down to what you like. And your tastes will probably change toward stronger smokes. Or start bringing in the cooladors, you will need the storage.

5augie5 - nothing wrong with 'chat toom' foreplay ... it just takes away from the original post, and degrades the integrety of this forum. Once an while, to spice things up, is fine ... but all the time gets old.

Hey, if you're into that sort of thing, take it private ... hehehe!

Hey StogeeBoy welcome to the community. We're like a family around here. We fight and argue sometimes, but we all have one love. S M O K I N' C I G A R S !!!! Your question is a common one. Unfourtunatly after "mmay's" comment there wasn't much help for you. The 5 pack option is a good one. Go to trades if you get some sticks you don't like. Get together with some friends in your area to see what they are smoking and try one of theirs. I've been smoking cigars for over thirty years. Had some dog rockets and a lot of great ones. I have some favourites, and others I just like. I pretty much try anything once. There are so many to choose from, bid on some and hope that you like them. If not, hey, we buy wholesale, what the hell! Remember the size. Oh! Oh! here goes. I'll catch some flack from this next comment. Size does matter! Legnth and ring size. If you buy a 7+ inch 48+, don't plan on going anywhere too soon. I'm 6'4" 310lbs, I like a BIG smoke. Pick a stick that fits your personality. When it gets right down to it... F'em all. Smoke what you like! We'll be there for you if you have anymore questions.

i like the wounded dove thing (sounds like a t.v. mini series). i'd suggest you try to win a couple of different 5 pack auctions and/or a sampler, at less than $10.00 each(with shipping it'll work out to less than $3 a stick). i don't think you can go wrong with any of the cigars here, with the exception of some of the packaged cigars you might expect to see in a 7/11

Cigarstash.com has a pretty fair 5 pack that's cheap as heck. Good sample line there. You get a good idea of the type of cigar U like then come here and bid on your humidor stuffers. I tell my friends that a good starter smoke is anything Macanudo. Most of 'em agree its a good starter that won't get you laughed at (ie: White Owl, Havatampa etc.).

If you are need of a little travel dor (Cigar Caddy), toch/double flame lighter and some great smokes, I recommend bidding on the GRINGO III package, (search the site for it). The cigar caddy is a great thing to have if you like to take your smokes with you on a boating trip, fishing or anywhere outdoors near water, and the Perdomo Reserve #4 Maduros included in that deal are excellent! (I am smoking one as we speak.) plus, there is a very nice BOWMAN lighter in the dewal to boot! The lighter alone sells locally for 20 bucks!

Check it out! One of the many excellent bargains to be had around here! :o)

There doesn't appear to be a Gringo III up at the moment, but keep looking, I bet one just ended recently and they will likely post another lot this weekend.
