Not that I have to worry, but that seems a bit Commie.

They establish the rules to encourage people to save their money,
then when some jerk gets elected he wants to take away elders'
life savings, just because they're successful. (not to mention Medicare)

This is almost the same as when they confiscated our individual
Soc. Sec. accounts, and spent it on the Vietnam War and for
Welfare. And we now know how that worked out. Politicians
are dinosaurs... Genus:Jerkus Species:Maximus.

His whole campaign was based on these type of socialist principles. People voted that's what they want. Why is it a surprise now?

What's scarier is that the amount that depend on the guberment rises faster than those than those that could possibly be effected in their lifetime.

Of course I would expect that our guberment officials will again be exempt from any such measures on the American people.

Confiscate? As in, "oh, hey, I'll be taking that now...thanks." What's the purpose?

In addition to what cacman said, with the amount of people rising who are dependant on the government, they will be completely onboard with this if they feel they will lose their benefits (handouts).

It's like Obama is sitting back in his big leather chair saying, "I love it when a plan comes together." ...just not in a cool John "Hannibal" A-Team way, but more like a Mr. Burns (Simpsons) way.

Come back to earth and take a short break from Planet Fox, please. Confiscate? Confiscate? The plan doesn't even limit the amount you can have in the account. It does limit $3M to the IRA tax incentive. This top of the lungs chicken little stuff directly contributes to the right's credibility issues. Probably as much or more than the '47% sense of entitlement bloc'.

IRAs...Roth IRAs...401Ks will all be targets for taxation or confiscation. The only question is when. Austerity is going to suck for the rich. The problem is "rich" will be defined as anyone with a job or savings or real estate.

Agreed. Is this a proposed plan or is this law?
Don't know the source for this "Confiscation" but I'd be interested in seeing it. The devil is in the details not the rhetoric. ram27bat

After doing a little reading on this it looks like BO has buried in the proposed budget a limit on the amount of tax deferred deposits into retirement accounts. The limit would be ~3 Million dollars of tax deferred deposits or $205,000 a year you could get from your retirement account if it were converted to an annuity. The proposed piece of the budget would currently affect just 0.03% of retirement accounts, says the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Just some of the info that I was looking for. Hell, I certainly don't have to worry about this. Maybe one day (but everything will change 100 times before I have to worry about it.) I just want to get my taxes filed and get some money back before its all spent.

How does Obama plan on getting his hands on the Irish Republic Army's money? I thought they officially dissolved back in '05.

We have effectively replaced the idea of working hard and getting ahead with class warfare. Being succsessful is now a bad thing that should be taxed and punished. It sounds wonderful to the unwashed masses.

Reminiscent of the 60's... It's once again a crime to own property and be prosperous.
Easy to forget the the boom in construction and housing is fluffed-up by the Fed's investment of $40mil/month in housing & construction. Another bubble being filled.

MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST DONE A COMMERCIAL WITH OBAMA ROLLING SOME GUY OFF A CLIFF IN A GOLDEN WHEELCHAIR.

ENUENDO IS MORE ACCEPTABLE BY BRAVE SOULS WHO HAVE DEEP ROOTED CONVICTIONS THAT THEY DON'T WANT PUBLIC.

We need to raise Medicare premiums and cut Social Security. (Oh wait, Obama's proposing that also!)

All that is missing is activation of the death panels.

The reality of that happened in Cyprus. I created a thread where I dared ask...when will this happen here.

American's will not take to the streets. They've been pacified. They like the free stuff. They're also dumber now than they were in the 60-70's when they realized shutting down DC with riots and protests were the order of the day.

They changed the American mindset.

It won't happened again.

I knew a guy in college (roughly 25ish years ago) who was really cool. His name was Emitt something or other (I never could pronounce his last name....something like Frowncrownin III) He saw the bad in everything the country did and predicted our demise on a daily basis. All empires end blah blah blah. It is true (so it's a safe bet) it's just a matter of timing. Anything that happened around the world or any specific event that happened to directly support his view was amplified, yet he was oblivious to the things that didn't support his view. I'm pretty sure he's still waiting for the world to end. His dad was cool though, he always had beer on tap.

The funny part is he is was a flaming liberal. Sure he called himself an independent or libertarian (code at the time for pot smoker) but he was a lib. It was Reagan era and Reagan's message was America's best days were ahead. The republicans at the time (self included) called Emmit out on being a foolish lib and for pretending to be some sort of glib deep thinker that knew more than others. They/we were right about that. Some called him unpatriotic. I'm not so sure about that one. He was worried about our country in his own way.

He was wrong about the imminent demise however (one thing he happened to be worried about was the ballooning deficit under Reagan..it was massive for the time, now it seems small). It's the equivelent to walking around every day saying we are going to die. Yes we are. We all will. Again, it's a matter of timing. If you think you have an imminent disease and are going to die soon that's one thing. If it's 25 years later maybe you were a little wrong (even though it is true you will die). You can walk around saying we are going to die and never be technically wrong. Then when you die you will be right and smarter than everyone else! You can spend a lot of time ruminating on the fact you are going to die.

Meh. It is interesting to me to see repuplicans/conservatives etc being the doom and gloomers. Oh yea I mean independants and libertarians that hate all things liberal.

Yes we have many issues and can not stick our heads in the sand. Yes the country will not exist forever and we will have more financial crisis. It's a matter of timing.

The sky IS falling, it just may not be when we think..

the thing is mutually exclusive logic kicks in. you either need to have your eyes closed and head in the sand or admit the sky is falling. It is not possible to think anything in between.

I'm sure everyone from Marie Antoinette to our government unions have a firm grip on reality and were not insulated.

Amounts over $3M today, and over $30K tomorrow, then $3K next decade... a slippery, socialist slope.
