New $444 million hockey arena is still a go in Detroit

Detroit's financial crisis hasn't derailed the city's plans to spend more than $400 million in Michigan taxpayer funds on a new hockey arena for the Red Wings.

Advocates of the arena say it's the kind of economic development needed to attract both people and private investment dollars into downtown Detroit. It's an argument that has convinced Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Kevyn Orr, the emergency manager he appointed to oversee the city's finances, to stick with the plan. Orr said Detroit's bankruptcy filing won't halt the arena plans.

"I know there's a lot of emotional concern about should we be spending the money," said Orr. "But frankly that's part of the economic development. We need jobs. If it is as productive as it's supposed to be, that's going to be a boon to the city."

But critics say the project won't have enough economic impact to justify the cost, and that it's the wrong spending priority for a city facing dire economic conditions.

Imagine that. City's going bankrupt, but they can pizz away half a billion dollars on an arena. Isn't this the same city who's council has time to pass a George Zimmerman resolution which last time I checked has nothing to do with them?

No surprise. Down here our Govennor has slashed funding to colleges and universities yet they continue to contribute to the Tom Benson welfare fund even though the price of SAINTS tickets my FIL finally gave up this past season have risen from $22 each in 1986 to $302 each in 2012.

I really don't understand the reasoning. Taxpayers fund the stadiums, but are unable to watch the games played in that very stadium their tax dollars built if the owners can't sell all of their massively overpriced to tickets.

Those wacky negroes.
They need a Marion Barry to fix what Detroit's first African- American- World- Populist- Hustler Extraordinaire mayor Coleman Young done did.

No stadium until they finish their mac n' cheese.

I say bring in Robert Mugabe and his land reforms in to fix Detroit's socioeconomic issues. He did such a good job in Zimbabwe, setting Detroit on the right (left?) path would be no problem.

Of course, in Detroit under a Mugabe administration pretty soon a loaf of bread would cost about $100,000 assuming there was any bread in the stores, but that's the price we should be happy to pay for social justice and the fair and equitable redistribution of wealth.

Dad, that is human condition. Oppose the devil who is responsible for your dirt floor + 2 crappy squares a day, then replace with a devil who looks like you & feeds you the dirt floor 3x day under squalid conditions while they live in luxury... Look at most of the Third World after the racist colonial powers left.

Extrapolate that to just about every major city that I can think of, most of which are run by idiots with the right coloring who promise their constituency everything and then blame the Government and society for their failures. At some point one has to close their legs, get some sort of education or learn a skill/trade, and try a different approach other than Federal panhandling. Alas, that's what our Government appears to want. and promotes.

With industry all but gone from my beloved Detroit, casinos, bar/restaurant, festival/sporting events that draw suburbanites to the city to spend their monies is the new source for cash.

The people who buy the seats want a new stadium.

We suffered through the first mass exodus of unskilled Michigan refugees in the early 80s here in the great state of Texas,,

Yes, you wouldn't want the finest industrial, and automotive engineers, and workforce ever assembled in this country, to come there and tell y'all how things are done.
Except for ship building, from WW1 to the gas crisis of the late 70's Detroit was the greatest manufacturing center ever assembled in one place.

And now its a chit hole with with some killer things for us suburbanites to go do.

Beloved.

And, that leads to the sole factor to consider whether to build the new space- rate of return. Either the city rationally expects it will profit from it or that it won't. Everything else here is subterfuge and a load of crap. Complain when it acknowledges its broke and can't fix its problem other than by filing BK AND complain when it considers a fiscally rational decision. Which one is it? You cannot have it both ways on this one...

The major beneficiaries of taxpayer subsidies for sports stadiums are not the communities as a whole, but the team owners and the businesses who directly benefit from the stadium being in a particular neighborhood.

Detroit would be fine if they could just convince the white people to move back from the suburbs instead of just coming in the city for Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings games.

How do the Canadians feel about minority filled cities? I've been to canada and saw fewer folks of color than a DNC fundraiser.

I, for one, am glad it's still on. I'm gonna pull a hat trick and bust all the windows out of three buildings on my way to the game.

They're starting to complain about whites moving down to the midtown area, raising values, opening places charging more than most can afford.

Think they called it dislocation.

It worked for Greece. Impressive, albeit empty, facility that really spruced up the walk to the food kitchens in Athens. Applause
The crumbly leg wrestling & teat flopping while waving paper strip flag in the air while you tumble stadium is nice too.

The free spending profligates in DC now want to tear down ancient RFK after the Diplomat's (soccer?) lease expires in a couple of years & rebuild another stadium there in order to draw back the Redskins from the Maryland suburbs...

It never ends.Speak to the hand
