WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is performing a same-sex wedding this weekend in what is believed to be a first for a member of the nation's highest court.

Ginsburg is officiating at the marriage of Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser and John Roberts, a government economist, on Saturday. Kaiser says he asked Ginsburg to officiate because she is a longtime friend.

The private ceremony is taking place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a memorial to President John F. Kennedy. The 80-year-old Ginsburg, an opera lover, is a frequent guest at the center.

Justices generally avoid taking stands on political issues. The wedding, though, comes after the court's landmark ruling in June to expand federal recognition of same-sex marriages, striking down part of an anti-gay marriage law.

You have to appreciate the irony of two guys getting married to each other at a memorial dedicated to the memory of a president who was a profligate womanizer.

What??? You expected a Rabbi, Priest of Minister? Sarcasm

They are friends, but it does look like taking sides. OTOH, nobody would care if it was a heterosexual couple.

Yeah....normally, Except with THIS particular issue. Those who said early on that they aren't looking for EQUALITY....they're after " Special Rights " were all over this. Protection in the work place.......special time off in the military ( without said leave time counting against " leave time". 10 days in which to travel to a state that marries gheys ) Someone tell me of a case where a heterosexual couple wanted to marry while engaged in active duty and were granted 10 days in which to leave and get married.......THESE ARE SPECIAL RIGHTS!!!!

WTF does the military rant have to do with the fact that the couple is to be married by Ginsburg?

I don't think this constitutes the type of taking of a public stance on an issue- because the issue has already been decided. Otherwise, a Justice couldn't have much of a personal life for concern that anything they do in public may be seen as taking a public stance.

You do generally wish the couple well, don't you?

wheel,

Exactly IMO!

However, this marks the finality of the start/real beginning of a major cultural and legal shift/recognition of general gay couples' rights and place in our society. Sort of... the history of law and society. Kind of like seeing the Civil Rights Movement's turning point while in the actual midst of it (although of course I think the Civil Rights Movement was far larger and of greater importance in our time and to date) as opposed to looking back after the fact. I am just a "current major history" buff of "SCOTUS and society" rather than a purely legal scholar of SCOTUS or a historian.

I don't think blacks care for any comparison between the civil rights movement and the ghey movement.

They gheys won. Now let's see if they gay-homo militant extremists fade away to relish in the victory.....or go after churches and their tax-exempt status because they discriminate.

They already are. I read about a bill in Kalifornia to remove the tax exempt status for any discriminatory group like the Boy Scouts, Little League Baseball and the Future Farmers of America. Some sort of 'special' hormone thing?

Churches- freedom of religion and association.

Non-religious organizations- freedom of association, the protect from which doesn't even come close to the religion protection

There's probably any number of 'community organizers' who'd consider that attitude to be raciss. Shame on you

That's so funny, first person I thought of when you said Ginsburg was not the diminutive imp on the Supreme Court, it was Douglas H. Ginsburg. Remember the second Reagan nominee to be "borked" after the brilliant and honorable Bork? The reason he was unfit? The accusation by Nina Totenberg(sp?) that he MAY have smoked grass during his college days...

We've come along ways, baby...ThumbDown

Btw, Douglas Ginsburg (no relation to Ruthie) was later thought fit enough to serve as DC Circuit's chief judge for most of the 2000's.

The same one who savaged Clarence Thomas as well.

It's rumored Vivien invented the bubble dance. How else would she have snagged a prize like Fred Mertz? I think he started wearing his pants around his nipples during filming of Gentleman Jim with Errol Flynn.

But we digress. God bless Ginsburg for taking such a bold step. Perhaps she'll marry Kagan or Souter next. Both are gay and fancy free.
Ahhhh the exuberance of youth.
