Clinton to Obama: Keep ObamaCare promise, let Americans 'keep what they got'
Published November 12, 2013 •

Bill Clinton, in an unusually blunt critique of the sitting president, said President Obama should live up to his promise to Americans that if they like their health plans, they can keep them.

The former president weighed in on the roiling controversy about health plan cancellations during an interview with the site Ozy.com. The current president recently apologized to the public for the millions of cancellation notices that are going out -- despite him assuring Americans that, under ObamaCare, they could keep their coverage if they want.

For Clinton, the apology doesn't cut it.

"So I personally believe, even if it takes a change to the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got," Clinton said.

Clinton defended the health care law as a whole, but explained how the broken promise on health coverage can hurt young people. He relayed the story of a young man who said his individual market plan was canceled and replaced with one whose premiums were twice as high. Though his deductibles and co-pays were lower, that savings is only realized if he gets sick, Clinton explained.

Clinton's comments could cause problems for Obama, who has resisted any major changes to the law. Obama, in explaining the cancellation notices, has clarified that under ObamaCare, policies could be canceled if they had been altered in any way since the passage of the law.

That nuance was not included in the president's initial explanations.

House Republicans, as well as some Senate Democrats, are now planning legislation that would indeed allow people losing their current coverage to keep their plans. The House is planning to vote on its measure on Friday.

The administration argues that while some are losing their current coverage, those plans will be replaced by better-quality insurance. The flip side is that they could be more expensive.

Republicans are going to write laws that further dictate what private insurers can do with their business?

Look for the democrats to join them. They need a lifeline as more and more of the faithful loose coverage and jump ship.

so?

Folks have fallen out of a 5 story window. No need to alarm them. They'll land soon enough.

Now, the Republicans will see to it that they don't garner much support as a party & will instead turn it into a Pyrrhic victory by muddying the water & getting involved in extending and "rescuing" the Democrat's health care (aka death wish) debacle. In the meantime, the uninsured (and illegal) tap their feet nervously.

Former Vice President ****** Cheney told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Tuesday he is “inclined to agree with Bill Clinton” that President Obama must try to find a way to ensure Americans can keep their current health plan if they choose.

However, Cheney said on “On the Record” he is unsure how the Obama administration would do so, given that many of the policies have already been cancelled because they do not measure up to the law as it is written.

“I’m inclined to agree with Bill Clinton – that that’s something that ought to be attempted but given the complexity of the system, you’ve already got people now who have lost their policies, who can’t get new ones,” Cheney said. “These policies have been declared by law to be inadequate because of the standards that are written into the federal regulations. I’m not quite sure how now you go peel back that onion.”

Cheney said the real solution to the problem is abolishing the health care law.

“I think exactly what needs to be done is to repeal ObamaCare,” he said. “I think it’s a serious, serious foul-up. Major, major problem in terms of the government trying to do more than it’s capable of doing.”

Cheney should shut his mouth, take his Halliburton money, & just go away. He and his daughter are a couple of skeevy bunghole gnats.

Insurance companies will adjust rates based on actuarial rates, participation, and expenses. They are in business to make money- often referred to as obscene profits. That is why some are abandoning the Exchanges in some states and canceling policies right and left.

The Affordable Care Act is destined to drive us into an across the board affordable Medicaid coverage for all and you will like it because it'll be subsidized by the young and healthy.

Be patient, Drafter. Don't panic. Your rates & deductions will initially inevitably rise but in the end you'll be fine under the Government's cheaper (and crappier) single payer plan.

I never got a letter so I'm still coasting along... but Obama letting the cancelled dudes keep their original policy for another year still isn't getting to keep your policy.... Mellow

The course has already been set. They only get to keep their policies if the states allow it and the insurance companies are willing to issue an illegal policy for a year with the promise of no prosecution.

Cancellations will not be stopped. Screw them. Let them eat cake.

No, because it's not up to Obama. It's the insurance company's call. Everybody's plan will change every year to some degree, that's normal. Thus, no one's policy will be grandfathered once they change or they will violate the law IMHO.
