Just an idea that might reduce some problems.
1. Negotiate all the details before agreeing to a trade, i.e. ship date, exact details of the cigars to be traded etc.
2. Exchange telephone #s as well as e-mail addresses.
3. In case of a problem, make three seperate attempts to contact the other party (on 3 seperate days).
4. Only after three seperate resolution attempts should anything be posted. The initial posting should be limited to the facts. No flaming until you have some solid evidence that it's warranted.

This probably seems very anal-retentive to some of you. On the other hand, I haven't had any problems with trades (yet).

Maybe some of you have better ideas. Anyway, I think trading should be an enjoyable experience, a way to try new cigars or get more of your favorites without having to plunk down cash. It's also a way to get to know others. I've enjoyed interacting with SteveS, Danny, Xibbumbero and others through trades. If trading is stressful, it's better to just buy retail.

And that is the end of JR's Manifesto on this subject.

Good stuff, JR ... based on my experience, the guys here are some pretty damn fine folks and the only problems I've been aware of, or party to, have been breaks in communication ... the list you've proposed here would pretty much eliminate those. Anyone can make a mistake or overlook something, things can and do go awry in transit, but good planning and good communication will reduce the incidents of such problems and preclude hard feelings from arising when such things DO occur.

I've been on both ends of such problems once or twice, and if I'd not known it before, have learned the value of good communication.

The person that initiates the trade should be the one that sends the cigars last. The last person had trouble because they sent cigars before the tradee sent money. When sending money it is customary to verify the validity of the payment before the goods are sent. Using standard auction practices would avoid most hassles.

I believe the last person had problems because the post office didn't deliver my check in as timely a fashion as we both thought.

Sorry to have caused so much trouble on this otherwise spectacular trading board. All these suggestions are good ones. Especially the one that suggests contacting the individual before posting on a board.

Another good suggestion is to provide a tracking number so both parties can see where the package is in shippment.
