Many of you are as old or older than me. When we were young, smoking was an accepted behavior. I remember kicking cigarette butts around while I was following my mom on her grocery shopping trips. Smoking was allowed at most sporting events and such. All of my close relatives were a lot older than me. My mom was 45 when I was born. They all smoked cigarettes. Some of the old guys rolled their own using Bugle bags. I remember the house having clouds of smoke drifting from room to room when the relatives came over for dominoes.
I didn't start smoking cigars until I was 30. I never smoked more than a few puffs from a cigarette. I was wondering if everyone had the clouds of smoke in their house while growing up. Only a few of you are able to smoke indoors so it seems things have changed. I have to go somewhere else to smoke indoors.

Grew up in a smoke filled house, both parents smoked. Long seperated now, mom is an anti-smoking zealot and dad still smokes, but outside. As common as it was, I can't imagine smoking inside with my kids around.

I remember my grandpa lighting up his unfiltered Camel cigarette in an unairconditioned coupe driving from Oklahoma to California in 90 -110 degree weather. I remember the first puff of smoke off that camel always smelled rich and delicious.

h*ll, i worked at a hospital in cleveland that didn't "outlaw" smoking until at least 1990 or so. the nurses sat at their work stations puffing away while the CEO smoked some killer cigars in his office.

actually X, it is Chestefield that is most highly reccomended by doctors, I have the old ads to prove it. I remember Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble smoking Winston cigarettes, I wasn't old enough to see it as it originally aired, but once during a syndicated episode they forget to cut that part out. None of my parents smoked but whenever my dad had bridge party the house filled with smoke. A couple of times when my wife took the kids to California to visit grandparents, I would smoke a cigar in the house each night until the second to the last night they were due to come home. I aired out the room and she never noticed the smell, I just told her and she didn't seem to mind.

I grew up in a non-smoking house ... I toyed with cigarettes, a pipe and cigars in HS, but took up smoking regularly while in college ... never once smoked in my parents home ... I smoked in my own home for years, but quit cigarettes in the early 70s and quit pipes and cigars in the early 80s ... went for several years without smoking, and never thought twice about the cigarettes or the pipe, but the cigars I truly missed ... since falling off the wagon and taking up cigars again, I have not smoked in the house ... I do light them indoors on windy evenings, but carry them out right away. When it rains in the winter time or is just too damn cold, I take my cigar on a ride in the car ...

My greatest cigar-smoking pleasure, however, comes in the company of other smokers ... I love to have a couple of guys over and sit on my patio with a single-malt and a cigar and thoroughly enjoy spending an hour or so in the local cigar store, sitting in the club chairs, watching the good looking gals walk past outside and shooting the breeze with the other guys ... in some respects, this forum is like that for me ... I enjoy the 'conversations' we have here and would like nothing more than for it to be in person rather than virtual ...

I smoke in the house, usually after everybody has gone to bed.I'll open the front door the patio door and sometimes the garage,we get a nice breeze through the garage to the patio and can't smell a thing the next day.

Grew up in a smoke filled house too; Grandpa rolled his own Buglers by hand for a long time, then got high tech and got one of those rolling machines with this big lever on it. Used to watch him roll a whole can, clip the ends of the cigs and put 'em in those clear plastic cigarette cases...Dad has since gone to a pipe and really pisses Mom off when he gets too lazy to smoke outside, especially when the skeeters are out in force; they seem to love that fragrant pipe tobacco. I smoke on the back porch with whatever libations I take a liking too that evening.

Both parents smoked. Always had those table lighters scattered around the house and huge glass ashtrays. My dad would have buddies over for cards a couple times a month. There would be clouds of smoke in the house so thick, you would have to sit closer to the TV to watch it. Seemed that the smoke would clear out in no time once everyone left. Funny I never noticed the smell of cigarettes on me or my clothes. Now that I quit smoking cigarettes (5 years now) and only smoke cigars (not real often) I can smell tobacco smoke whenever I am exposed to it and on others. I made a rule to myself (when I smoked cigarettes) that I never smoke or allow anyone to smoke in my car. Really gives the air conditioner a bad smell. I am strictly an out side smoker around the house. Relegated to the patio, considering there are rugrats in the house, it'll stay that way. I live for the occasional cigar friendly place to have a drink. Or a cigar store that has a place to lounge..There's only one bar in town (Club Habanos)that caters to cigar smokers. Ca has such strict anti-smoking laws.

Smoke filled house? Man, I can still remember how my Dad smoked Chesterfield 100's 3-5 packs a day, then in his later years he smoked a pipe. Every room had an ashtray, including the cars and the bathrooms. Boy, how times have changed. Some new cars these days don't even have a lighter nor ashtray. I rented a car from Avis one time from the airport after a 6 hour flight hoping to get a chance to light up for the 2 hour drive home, and the F*** car had no lighter in it. Smoking areas in most places in my area are scarce. Hence I enjoy those rare public areas and Cigar Shop lounges that permit smoking. As far as my house is concerned, I do have to smoke in the outdoor areas (porch, patio) or some designated areas (basement, garage), but It's for my fiances health reasons. Yes, times have changed in the USA, but I do find my daily moments to enjoy one of my favorite pastimes.

when I bought a new car for the wife, a Honda, there was no cigarette lighters, and in fact we were told they would have to be speical ordered! My wife didn't care much, but still I found it arrogant of auto makers to do this. Thank God for my 89 Caprice cop car, with a lighter, and ashtrays in front and on the doors in the backseat. I rented a car two months ago, and it also had no lighter, but was never told I couldn't smoke in it, so I smoked and smoked most with the windows up. The non smoking hotel rooms was the last straw for me, over the edge hysteria I call it.

Agree with Aberdeen, when I leased my Acura I was shocked with the same bull sh-t response from the dealer, and I said, "fine, I will not take the damn car without the lighter!" Needless to say they found one for me in about 5 minutes time! I have since purchased the Acura and I smoke cigars in my car when I like......screw the PI police and activist! Charlie

here here Charlie, I love to smoke in my car, even though it doesn't have a lighter or ashtray (the dealer gave me a lighter when I bought it and it blew the fuse, now I carry a regular lighter). The PC police can kiss my a$$, it's still a free country right?? or at least I was lead to believe it was...
