Ammo Boxes

Just got back from my local Ace Hardware where they had a pallet load of empty used Ammo boxes (presumably from our fine military forces). Had 'em retailing for $5 a piece, so I grabbed one. I've heard that ammo boxes can be used to store cigars...would I be correct? When I opened it, it had a very pleasant smell (of what I believe might be cedar?). It reminded me of my days in St. Helena when I frequented many wine cellars, but can't for the life of me remember what created this nice odor. Question: Is it OK to store my cigars in these? If so, anything special required before utilizing said cases as a humidor (other than the obvious humi-ingredients)?

PS- If these are good for storage, I'm heading back to Ace for more and it'll be "goodbye tupperdores".

Without being able to offer any specifics, I can tell you that my son, (who's recently out of the Navy) and some of his shipmates lined several ammo boxes with cedar, installed humidifiers in them, and successfully stored an impressive stash of ISOMs they acquired during their global travels ... the ammo boxes did a good job for them, even during their 6 month-long tour of duty in the Persian Gulf, an area of the world that one would imagine would challenge even the best of humidors ... I'll be seeing him tomorrow and will ask for more detail on the subject ...

WJ: I tried finding USAHOGS original post but it's eluding me...did find this other one which basically says the same thing as far as I remember. Hope it's useful!

Once Again I will post this Suggestion, I think someone removed my last one.. Anyways, I use Empty 20 mm Ammo Cans (purchsed at Army Surplus) they are Air tight. I store all my overages in them along with a Humistat that i have made up myself instead of Distilled water I use Alcohol(Scotch, Burbon, everclear, etc I line them in the old ceder cigar boxes. then store them in my Basement were it is cool once a month I will check on them and rotate the slats if need be!!!! I have pulled out soem very fine and Aged Cigars from this method. and its cheap too!!!

There's at least one company that sells these full of cigars. Wish I had kept some of mine form my Seabee days.

Thanks to everybody for their help so far. SteveS- would be curious to see what your son has to say. E-chick- thanks for digging up some old board info. Air tight is right! Plus, I imagine one of these could hold up to about 50 cigars (once lined and humi is placed). To Eleltea- don't we all wish we would've saved some of the stuff that seemed irrelevant years ago. Whenever I happen upon some piece of memorabilia I once possessed that is selling for $$$, it makes me want to become a garbage collector. Of course, my wife ain't gonna hear of that...LOL.

Interesting note; these boxes might be a little older than I thought. Maybe some ex/current military folks can help me with white stamped letters on the front of the box. It reads: 8-Fuze Proximity M728, Lot FCI-I-7A, Loaded 1-69. Might these be Vietnam era boxes? Not important, in terms of cigar storage, but nice-to-know stuff.

Could they be grenade boxes and not ammo boxes?...hence the "fuze" term on there...maybe 8 sec fuzes?
I've heard they work great!..Lining it with cedar would definitely help

You can buy plastic "ammo" boxes at a boating supply store. I have a few on my boat for tool and supply storage. I never gave any thought to using them as cigar storage.

One word of caution, you would never want to leave these sealed for long periods of time, say over a month. Part of the aging process releases gasses from the cigars that you want to let out. All good humis have a little bit of breathability in order to regulate the air inside.

"Part of the aging process releases gasses from the cigars that you want to let out." The similarities between a man and his cigars are quite astounding.

I prefer not to store my smokes in metal containers. Make sure your old ammo boxes dont have a musty metallic or oily smell. They look cool but I think there are better choices for cigars. Great containers for "stuff" though.
