Bias-Free Language Guide claims the word 'American' is 'problematic'

The University of New Hampshire has a "Bias-Free Language Guide" on its website, which "is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community."

Terms such as "American," as well as other terms are deemed "problematic."

Saying “American” to reference Americans is also problematic. The guide encourages the use of the more inclusive substitutes “U.S. citizen” or “Resident of the U.S.”

The guide notes that “American” is problematic because it “assumes the U.S. is the only country inside [the continents of North and South America].” (The guide doesn’t address whether or not the terms “Canadians” and “Mexicans” should be abandoned in favor of “Residents of Canada” and “Residents of Mexico,” respectively.)

Give me a ------- break. The USA is the only country in/on the two continents that has America in it's name.

When can we have to much PC?

To be fair, their statement is true.
And given that they are trying to provide a guide to speaking on a campus with likely students from around the globe, this is probably intended to make communication more clear.

Of course, the post wants to make it sound like they are trying to be anti american or something. You know, to get people riled up about nothing. And why would Canada and Mexico references be changed? They are unambiguous. Our country's name is "United States of America". Unless you refer to US citizens as "United States of Americans" you open yourself up to some ambiguity (not much, but some).

Some more examples from their guide:

• It’s OK to say “people of advanced age” or “old people,” but not “older people, elders, seniors, senior citizen.”

• Don’t use “rich,” use “people of material wealth.” “Being rich gets conflated with a sort of omnipotence; hence, immunity from customs and the law. People without material wealth could be wealthy or rich of spirit, kindness, etc.”

• Use “other sex.” The term “opposite sex” is outdated.

It is hardly the word police. It says in a BIG BOX at the beginning that it is not the speech policy of the university. It's a guide to how to speak PC if you choose to.

For the record, we've all been horribly cruel to wheel:

Preferred: someone of short stature, little person
Problematic: dwarf, midget

USA'ians is just too award, 'Merica!

I'm good with, "Residents of Mexico illegally living in the US or "Criminals, former residents of Mexico in the USA illegally."

OTOH, former "Residents of Mexico" now citizens, and there are many, are Americans.

About 10 years ago I spent about 2 weeks driving around Costa Rica in a rental car. I was surprised to learn that many of the locals I met also referred to themselves as Americans. I believe no offense was given or taken when I would introduce myself an an American. A number of times I was asked where exactly I was from in the United States.

Did these people (many of whom were obviously quite poor by anybodys standards) get a better education of world geography than I did? (probably)

Were they simply raised to have a wider world view than the average "American"? (could be)

How arrogant and self-centered are we? (very)

You aren't very good at reading comprehension are you.

If it is specifically identified as a "guide" and "not policy" then no one is protected from anything. If you want to use certain words or phrases because you are concerned that you may be causing issues for individuals who fit in certain groups, then you use this guide. If you don't care, you don't use the guide. There is no requirements or punishment for noncompliance. It has no value to anyone outside of an individual who wants to use it. You're throwing a hissy fit over nothing.

Invade the rest of North America and all of South America. That would solve this problem and also clear up the whole illegal immigration debate.

Neither do you as I'm not throwing a hissy fit, in fact I think it's quite comical....for those who'd even consider following that line of thinking.

yeah... hyperbole like calling it the "word police", using a bunch of capital letters and exclamation points isn't a "hissy fit"... I've seen 5 year old children in the middle of a temper tantrum whine less.

It is word police and we both know it.....and they hope it catches with critical thinkers....like you. And
I seriously doubt your claim seeing as your allergic and otherwise hate children, so sell that chit elsewhere

You can "seriously doubt" my claim all you want. I do find it funny that your argument isn't "no I wasn't whining like a little b%tch" but instead was "You don't even like children so I doubt you've seen a child whine less than me!" While I do hate children, people bring them places. Occasionally I have to be in the same places.

If it's the word police, how are they policing anything? Please, tell me, in what way will the referenced document be used to control anyone's speech?

Several places I have worked (most notibly a large for profit insurance company) had communicaitons departments that suggested words to be used or not used as well as writing styles and communication techniques. We even had to take classes to learn how to write down to the 3rd or 4th grade level in order to communicate with folks similar to many in here LOL

this is nothing new it just fits the outrage agenda

Are you suggesting that first amendment rights don't apply to every environment and certain things can and can not be said depending where you are at and what they deem as acceptable? Has it always been this way?

go back and watch the original bugs bunny episodes.... the ones wayyyy back.... they are awsome and would cause a riot today. If the things he said were translated in to here there would be tons of ****************

OK, it is overkill. But to be fair, it is not a policy of UNH. In fact, it was added to the school handbook a few years ago (no one cared then) and recently the President or whatever he/she is called of UNH said though he disagrees with it, he does not believe the cure for censorship is more censorship (LIKE) and that's why it has not been removed.

Also, I'm pretty sure I read it was put together by a group of students, not by a liberal sanctioned Word Police Association.

Nothing to see here, just a lot of nonsense being sensationalized. You're all safe...for now!

I do object to Victor being called Vickie though.

So the Word Police in this example "Can't be" a bunch of dim witted foreign students ?
And no clearly the answer to censorship is allowing only One Side to be censored, that's how the liberal left works.

I do object to Victor being called Vickie though.
