Obama: Republicans 'pretty sure I'm an illegal immigrant'

President Obama, on the heels of announcing his executive actions on immigration, teased Republicans about the immigration debate -- saying some of them think he's an "illegal immigrant."

The president made the wisecrack at a town hall meeting in Nashville on Tuesday. Discussing the immigration debate, he urged Republicans to work with him.

“Now, does that mean everybody is going to listen to me on the other side? Not necessarily. They’re pretty sure I’m an illegal immigrant,” he said. The crowd laughed, but just to be sure, Obama added: "That was a joke."

Still, Republicans aren't laughing as they debate how and when to launch a legislative counter-attack to his executive actions, which could give a deportation reprieve to up to 5 million illegal immigrants. If a spending bill outlined Tuesday night passes, it would tee up a battle over that plan early next year.

Obama on Tuesday stressed that he "wants to reflect the wisdom of the American people" and in doing so provide a chance to those living in the shadows with a legal system that is "more reliable, more certain, more fair."

It is sort of funny given the insane birther issue many grabbed on to and some still contiunue to. What a stupid, shameful part of American Politics that most of us would like to forget. That issue alone is an example of the lack of rational thought while attacking someones opponent. There are several examples going the other way lest someone thinks digging one up nullifies their own stupidity or gives creedance to the other side. It does not. Dumb is dumb.

It's kinda fun to joke about (he obviously thinks so too) cause we know nothing will come of it... but when it first went down it seemed to me he could've put an end to it all but chose not to.. he chose to divide the people instead... Mellow

he could never put an end to it because it would just continue to fuel the issue no matter what he said or did. Folks still call his birth certificate bunk. It's pure silliness. At some point you just need to ignore the crazies.

The fact (if that is how you see it) that he is a crappy president doesn't change the pure stupidity that ever made this an issue to some folks. The same folks that are sure he is a muslim etc.

Seeing the stupidity of the folks beleiving that garbage is in no way a measure of support for obola, its just a semblance of reality.

Not so much anymore but we used to hang together. I wore pants at the time. I'm not wearing any now though.
