Am I ever pleased that someone has to take delivery of a package sent Priority Mail w/ Delivery Confirmation. I have my packages sent to the office, whether personal or business, that way someone is there to receive them. This weekend USPS attempted to deliver a package of choice stogies, but no one was at the office to receive it. Because of USPS delivery confirmation the package went back to the post office, and am I ever glad. For the first time in 11 years, some @$$h*!e went through our mailbox at the office. Sunday evening I found several pieces of mail open and waded up on the ground. It is a shame that people stoop to this level, but I am now a firmly believe in using the delivery confirmation on all packages. I did receive the smokes today, and am glad some stranger is not smoking them!!

I have been doing mail order business for 10 years, much of it international, and I have never had an parcel lost or destroyed. Though it seems the Post office gets a bad rap often, I think more than any other government agency they take their job seriously and the integrity of the post office has survived the crap and indifference that has infected the rest of governmental agencies. This is most unusual in that it is usually the private sector that out performs on all levels to government funded activities, in this case I feel much better dealing with the USPS than UPS, as I am on record here stating my opinion of that company.

you are right, with millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, you too can run a business that delivers on time about 80% of the time. just dont send anything too valuable

How does the phrase go? "Better to be thought a fool.....". Government subsidies of the postal service ended in the 70's.

hmm, your statement is curious because the balance sheet of the United States Postal Service shows "capital contributions from the US Government" to be over $3 billion annually in each of the last 11 years published from 1989 thru 99. earlier years were probably even greater. I guess in semantics you are correct that they no longer receive outright cash grants but what's the difference? it must be nice to receive an automatic few billion in capital every year.

Coming soon to the USPS, signature capturing. I'm a USPS employee and we're getting the lowdown on it all now here in the Prov area. You'll be able to not only confirm a delivery, but for a fee, actually be able to "see" who signed for it via online!
