Valedictorian's Beard Gets Him Booted From HS Graduation March

Scholar athlete Andrew Jones was at the top of his Louisiana high school class with a 4.0 grade point average that made him valedictorian of his 2016 graduating class. But there was a problem.

The Amite High School senior had a beard.

And that facial hair got him barred from marching at the high school's recent graduation ceremony where he was scheduled to address the class.

“Our school board has a policy that does not allow any facial hair on male students,” Tangipahoa Parish school superintendent Mark Kolwe told ABC News today. “This young man was given at least three opportunities.”

He added: “I personally asked him to please go and shave so that he can walk with the other kids. He chose not to. I even asked the parents standing here to have him follow the policy.”

Other students went home to shave that day after school officials asked them to do so, Kolwe said, adding they “took care of what they had to do and marched.”

ABC News was unable to reach Jones, but his aunt Sabrina M. Davis posted on Facebook, "How can you take away his moment? You will never feel his pain, and you can never give his moment back to him ..."

Jones has also gotten the support of Amite City mayoral candidate T.R. McGee, who took to Facebook to lament a situation that he described as "not fair due to inadequate disciplinary polices."

"If the school was to discipline this adequately, one could easily see the justification," McGee wrote. "By them not enforcing this policy adequately, the school should first offer a public apology."

As for Dress Code and Uniform Regulations under Tangipahoa Parish School System policy, it’s clear: "Beards will not be allowed."

And superintendent Mark Kolwe said he has no choice but to enforce it, although he declined to comment on why the policy wasn’t enforced during the school year, except to say that the "principal was attempting to enforce the policy for graduation purposes."

“The board has a policy and we have to adhere to the policy until it gets changed,” he said. “Until it changes, I’m responsible for following it.”

It's not even a full beard??? And the article doesn't explain why there is a "no facial hair" policy or where that dress code policy came from?

Someone who didn't follow the rules, was dealt the consequences of his actions, and now outrage over that. Didn't you read the story?

Though, I recently pizzed off several people at work who consistently do not meet their job requirements and standards, by saying they should be fired. I don't know what their outraged about.

I still see that used quite a bit. RWNJs on another site which I visit refer to Michelle as Obama's beard.

Sounds like the "A LONGHAIR POLICY" ( they claimed hair clogged the pool filters)
At our Public swimming pool back in the 60's...

It was owned? Or managed, by two Greek brothers who
Were complete douche bags...

They were on a SICK "power trip" inspecting every guys hair and kicked them out when it was not to their liking.
Meanwhile , half the girls had hair down to their
Azz's.

Under normal circumstances I would agree with the principal. But there is a big problem for the principle and school board if the policy was not enforced during the school year as the article indicates.

So you agree that the school liberals were obviously not tolerant of facial hair.

This is typical and we see more and more of it. Liberals not tolerating basic human dignities like choice of bathroom, wearing hair, or open carry in church.

My god - will someone please think about the children????

Simple solution if the policy specifies male students. All he had to do was say he identified as a female.

Happened in the next parish over. Liberals or democrats for that matter are in short supply there. Basically he was told to shave if he wanted to walk per school board policy. He made a stand and got his 15 minutes of fame. The opportunity cost was not being able to walk or give his address. Win some, lose some. IIRC the sun rose in the east the following morning. At the end of the day who lost and who won?

C'est la vie.

in all honesty, no one lost anything big and no one won anything big...because this is exactly the type of story that is only being discussed due to advancements in instant information.

Instant information, to my (old) way of thinking does not equal quality info, important info, or pressing news. It is the afterbirth that spawns info-entertainment-news shows that tend to pop up around dinner time.

Don't get me wrong, if this was happening in my town, I would feel that there are potential implications possibly or possibly not affecting individual rights vs school administration's power...but it is only a local issue where it happened.

When I was in high school, I had a coach who taught world history - a subject he was in no way familiar with. He was always making mistakes that even I could catch.

On the final, he gave a 10 question test. All were yes or no questions. I scored a 95.

When I asked him how I could have scored a 95 on 10 questions he said be "I wanted you to know you could not always be right".

The coach wasn't real good at math either......
