Maintaining Humidity & Temperature Question

About a month ago I went to my local shop to buy a larger humidifier for one of my humidors. "Willie" told me that he'd sell me one for about 19 bucks, but if I went to the local dollar store I could make one for under 3 bucks! On his advice I purchased a travel case for a bar of soap and drilled 1/4" holes in it(4 rows of 4), and purchased enough sponges to soak up the lake in my backyard. He said the trick is to make sure the sponge is saturated not sloppy wet. After about 10 days in the humidor the temp and RH were perfectly balanced. About once a week I check the sponges and so far I'm happy to report that this is doing the job quite well! This might work out great for those of you with those Coolerdors.

With the extra money I was able to get more of those Buccanero Full Sails!!!!

LOVE the Bucanero's ... smoked my first one less than a month ago, had one on my b'day a couple of weeks ago and another last week ... those're some good cigars. I sure am looking forward to CI/CB having them for us.

(and Gonz, when you do, be sure to get the maddie torps, won't you? ... thanks)

I'll say this about them...They're a full bodied, well constructed cigar. I tend to go for maduros and like Leon Jimines,Mayorga,Hoyo,Partagas, and of course Padrons. I rate these slightly under a Padron. I went golfing with a friend yesterday a gave one to him and he kept commenting on it all the way down to the nub. He mentioned that he'd seen them at a couple of shops but not everywhere and had been wanting to try them but there was always another brand calling his name or funds were too low to grab one. If you see them...try one! I like the Full Sail line, but I've tried them all and they all have the same construction. Full Sail is just a heavier smoke.

They're Costa Rican maduros, right? You don't see these many places. I've got one simmerin', and it looks mighty tasty.

Dr - be careful with using sponges, not only do they hold less water, but they also don't prohibit mold growth very well. I recommend going to a florist and spending a buck in order to get "Oasis" floral foam(specify the wet kind). I holds a ton of water and helps prohibit mold growth! chris

i assume you are using pg also. it is the chemical that makes the humidor stay at about 70% humidity.

To both of you:

I was warned about the mold issue. When I bought the sponges they came in a 20 pack for a dollar. They way I figure it I'll swap out the sponges on about a 2 month average. When I check the sponges I rinse, and squeeze the water out a couple of times. Then I place them back under the tap and lightly squeeze water out,but make sure that the sponge is saturated.
Before I place the lids on the humidifier I squeeze some 50/50 on the top of the sponges. So far I'm happy to report that I haven't had a problem with this method. Like I stated earlier this was a really cheap method of producing the same results so much quicker and easier to maintain then the oasis types. I was going to wait about a year and see if I still have good results before I switch over to sponges on my other humidors. I'll update on a monthly basis for those that are interested.

Hope this helps out anyone that lives in a high humidity area like Florida!
