What happened to the argument that the GOP leaders used to oppose any proposal made by the Dem administration?

The federal deficit is the biggest threat to our national security!!! (The basic and primary rule of American democracy)

Today's corollary to that primary directive: The exception to the rule is when the GOP passes a plan that will increase the federal deficit, it will not harm our national security because it will boost the economy and make us stronger against the rest of the world. (hehe...smirk)

SPENDING is the problem. They cut taxes by a half mile... now, they need to cut spending by a mile and a half.

You mean the programs that we have paid for out of our payroll deductions? Both parties have been borrowing/stealing from these two programs for years and now they want to cut the benefits that we have already paid for. I still say that whatever congress votes for should apply to them as well. Cut their healthcare and pensions that are 100% paid for out of our taxes. fog

You have not been listening to your government. You did not pay for your SS and Medicare. You paid for the current users of those programs. It is up to the next generation to pay for your benifits. Of course we have screwed them with 20+ trillion of debt so you may not get all you feel you are entitled to.

Can we all just agree to cut social security and veteran aide out of the government all together? Niether one of those affect me; if I'm not the benefactor then why should I have to pay for it?

I assume the OP is referring to the return of a small portion of theft.

I agree with you, I don't understand why Congress doesn't have to abide by the laws they pass.......
Why do they keep calling my SS and Medicare benefits??
I've worked since I was 12 years old and paid everything I was asked to pay, so that "I would have something when I retired"(which meant nothing to me when I was 12), and now they tell me that it may not be there when I get there(and it means more to me now than when I was 12).
So how is it a benefit if I bought and paid for it.......I'm still paying into it???? A BENEFIT........I always used to think of it as an investment........dumb azzhorse

The GOP are elected tools of the elite wealthy class. This is a self dealing tax cut that big business and the rich have been demanding, while waiting for the stars to align: GOP Congress and the President. Throw some crumbs at the unwashed masses but leave the meat for the wealthy. The economy is rolling, big business is making record profits...Trump says so, but let's throw more money at them, and while we're at it , let's give the rich a bigger boost. If you like this, then you must be wealthy and couldn't care less about the rest of us.

If you like this and are not wealthy...congrats, hope you like your royal oligarchs...we've increased the opportunities for the rich to get richer and pass their wealth on to their kids indefinitely...

Just about every one of those politicians who voted for this and are not now among the one percent are looking forward to their big payday, when they leave office and take a cushy job from big business and their Boards. Guess how the average US Congressman will do personally, with the new tax plan? Average salary is $175.000, and gave themselves the biggest personal tax rate cut of 4%.

DMV missed my point about federal deficits: I 'm not saying that it is bad. EVERY PRESIDENT has increased the deficit...some some than others... Obama raised it the most in dollar amounts (but didn't double it as DMV claimed - only a 68% increase) but Reagan raised it by nearly 3 times (more than Obama) by the percentage increase over what he started with.

My point is that the GOP opposed everything Obama tried to do, using the national debt as the boogeyman...but when the GOP runs up the debt...the boogeyman is inconsequential...

Here's a neutral numbers examination of the history of our national debt under our Presidents:

I'm no fan of Obama or his and congresses' dealings with the budget or deficit, but linear logic doesn't matter much.

I am concerned about the deficit and have always been. It was one of my few issues with Reagan (I justified it using cold war), and even more so with Obammy. And eff yes I'll bitch, moan, whine and complain about it especially if it is going to get exponentially worse under this President and especially if it is a direct result of action taken (as opposed to compounding of others mistakes by not taking action to stop it). I don't buy the if obammy did it (with a republican congress) it's ok for my guy to do it more logic.

And you can say I have no room to do so, but I'll take that as a grain of salt from not only a former but one of the last remaining birthers.

By the way I just reread the key lime thread and am going to a walmart soon to have another bottle.

Here's the thing about deficits...we all live with and function very well with debt hanging over us. At least most of us. We carry mortgages, credit card, and auto/boat/college loan balances. If we are healthy, hard-working with a reliable income, we can manage with debt loads four or five times our annual incomes. At one time, the total amount of money I owed was about 7 times my annual income, but I was making monthly payments comfortably. As long as we can manage our repayment plans, which combined should be no more than half of our monthly income, debt is a way of life.

Our nation is the same. We generate lots of revenue and can carry tons of debt. Smarter people than me have been making claims for higher and lower deficits...
