CHIP funding question

I thought the Childrens Health Care Program was funded by the taxes they put on tobacco products. I know for a fact the cost of my cigars has risen dramatically through the years. So Congress is saying they are having a hard time coming up with funding to renew the program. Why? Plenty of tobacco products still being sold. Am I wrong in thinking when they raised the taxes on my cigars it was to raise money for the childrens healthcare program? If that's the case... where the hell is the money? Anyone know? Thanks.

Back when this was shoved on us, it was estimated that the US needed some 20+ million new smokers to make the math work...I guess they have haven't materialized yet. Maybe RJ Reynolds will get a federal grant for advertising...in order to get American teens to start smoking so we can pay for children's' health care.

This was a very dumb tax to begin with.

They tied a tax on a product to a completely unrelated use for the tax... That guarantees you will reduce your tax income (because you raise the price, decreasing the consumption) but increase your need for the revenue (add funding for children's health, that makes children cheaper to have, more people will have children)....

The decreased revenue would be visible almost immediately (not enormous, because cigarettes are relatively inelastic, but some change), over a number of years you would be expected to see the increased demand for revenue.

smoke more cigars...it's for the children...think of all the children...

GOP-led Congress decided not to continue funding of CHIP, a bipartisan program started in the 90's to provide funding for Medicare for kids in participating states. This is part of the GOP's overall strategy to repeal Obamacare and remove tax-payer funding of healthcare insurance and medical care. GOP's philosophy is that should be left to the private sector.

Yeah, I'm pretty well sick of going to the doctor and them not giving antibiotics. It's like wtf I'm sick once a year just fork over the meds. It's not like I'm asking for painkillers. Deregulate the whole thing, let the bubble pop, and watch the cost of goods and services deflate to their real market values.

So if the taxes are not going to be used for childrens health care...I guess we will be seeing a reduction in cigar prices? I am sure they will stop this tax on tobacco as it will no longer be used for this purpose. Prices should rollback soon right? Yeah, right.
