While you're figuring it out, why don't you wash the orange goo off of your chins.

This is ONE area where I don't begrudge Trump, using a medical condition to avoid the draft. It was during a time when service was compulsory and there was a draft, by lottery. We were involved in a very unpopular war. I drew a low number, in the 30's, the year I was up for the draft, which pretty much meant automatic induction. "Fortunately" for me, I had a broken wrist, which they x-rayed, when I had to report for service. I was granted a one year medical deferment. President Nixon ended the draft later that year.

I had #121 and it was the last year. It was never called.

Truthfully, don't know what I would have done. I was among the students who helped stir up enough chit to start the ball rolling in what really became the End of the Innocence of the American People.

Sadly, we haven't wrestled much power from the Ruling Class as they have been able to divert the gaze from them, but at least we aren't in the dark anymore.

For the record, my father and uncle served in WWII, and both felt that the Viet Nam War was not being fought for our "way of life" and therefore not worth the loss of American lives.

I'm fortunate I did not have to make a decision...but the idea of Amnesty for those that went to Canada would be an interesting discussion today.

Lessons learned. Lessons forgotten.

hah...I was in the middle of a lot of anti-war protests on campus and on the busy streets of Westwood around UCLA...was even on the 6 o'clock news getting clubbed by a cop as I ran into a crowd of fleeing students that got backed up at the top of some steps on the edge of the quad...I was a long-haired hippie then...

#10 another but Clinton.

I don’t hold this against trump or Clinton. Clinton really has nothing to do with this thread other than there can’t be a trump thread without a but Clinton.

Since Clinton is now a part of this, for many in here it was an issue about Clinton. It was a fair criticism. Kerry was swiftboated and he went. Whatever. Winky McFlightsuit has some funkyness to his record as well.

I’ve never cared about any of it (other than the mission accomplished flight suit thing but that was while President).

It is funny in a sad way to watch folks who did take issue when it wasn’t their guy discount it when it is. Folks have gotten so comfortable with being hypocrites as long as it supports their tribe.

Of course no one in here. I’ve never met a hypocrite, or a blind screaming partisan in person.

true.

in case anyone missed it, I did not attack Trump. I was extreme in my opposition to the Viet Nam War. I don't recall his position, but I also think his position at that time has no bearing on anything at all today.

Clinton's Draft Deferrment
In the autumn of 1969, Clinton entered the draft but received a high number (311) and was never called to serve -- however, Clinton made every effort to avoid the draft prior to entering it.

First, Bill Clinton received education deferments while at Georgetown and Oxford (where he helped organize demonstrations against the war). Second, Clinton attempted to avoid the draft for four years by enrolling, but never joining, the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Clinton had enrolled in the ROTC hoping to avoid military service for four years, but, wanting a future in politics, had a change of heart and entered the draft.

In December 1969, safe from the draft with his high lottery number, Clinton changed his mind about joining the ROTC program and wrote a letter to the director of the ROTC program thanking him "for saving me from the draft" and regretted misleading him by not revealing the extent of his opposition to the war. The letter was leaked by the Pentagon to ABC news early in the 1992 fueled criticism of candidate Clinton's character.

Later in the 1992 campaign, it became known that Clinton's uncle had attempted to get Bill Clinton a Navy Reserve assignment during the Vietnam war. Clinton said he didn't know anything about it to the press on September 3, 1992 but a day later admitted that a former draft board member had informed him of his uncles' attempt several months before.

Such an odd thread.
Bandy blows a load trying to dig up more dirt on President Trump.
Instead, even those BOTL's who dislike our President are siding with the President.

And to add insult to injury, I might actually take issue with a draft dodger.
Not as President, but as Commander in Chief.

We can say it was different times back then.
But in 40 years today will be "different times".

Makes for interesting discussion points.

Which was NOT Banderl's intent. Not even close.

Odd, I find that I agree with tail on one point: dodging service with a medical excuse when called may be OK for a citizen, but does it matter if the citizen becomes commander in chief? Like tail, I think it does, since the military may use that as a measure of the man who is their commander.

So tail agrees that banderl has pointed out another petard from which to hoist Trump...

but doesn't Trump also lose face by belittling a war hero (Tammy Duckworth) who lost both legs fighting to defend his right to use bone spurs as an excuse for not serving?

it is not hindsight nor revisionist history to point out that the Viet Nam War should not have happened.

Anyone who served deserves respect and should be treated with honor.

Those who helped end it also deserve respect, for they were correct, no matter what point in time the vantage point.

The men who served in Vietnam are hero's. The men who sent them there are not. Those who refused to fight were right. Those who call them criminals are not.

My point is still valid (albeit incorrectly stated). Draft dodgers, both... but Trump is worse, because he's Trump.

Bandy HATES Trump, so he grabs any little negative and worries it like a pitbull with a knotted rope.

Many here hated when people did that about Obama. Kind of ironical.

I'm sure you'd agree that many who served have disdain for us even today, I get it...there's no way to explain to them that many, not all, were here fighting an uphill battle against a corrupt and lying government that basically fooled Americans into backing that war.

We won, and there was no joy. but without those efforts, no could say how many more of our fellow citizens would have died or been maimed.

And eventually even the most ardent supporters came to realize that we can not blindly trust.

Wake up man - The idea is to say “look over there!” when the next news breaks about Trump effing up again.
So Hitler is perfect.

Trump lies - Hilter started WWII.
Trump acts out as a racist - Hitler tried to commit genosid.

I mean the whole “but clinton” thing is a bit lame, don’t you think?
