Why the new layout? Because we desktop users all have to get screwed because of the holy 5-inch-screened smartphone that everyone has to worship and bend over backwards for, and Google who is effectively preventing companies from having separate, highly-functional and feature-rich desktop-optimized sites (meaning, the way ALL SITES USED TO BE!), and instead forcing companies to only have a single site.
The idea was that companies would spend lots of time adding complex code and layout to add lots of extra features that make full use of huge desktop monitors and precise mouse pointers when it detects a desktop browser is being used, but predictably, few companes bother to spend the money and time to do this, because it's MUCH cheaper and easier just to make one simplistic, dumbed-down smartphone layout, then stretch it way too big to fit desktop monitors and call it a day, which looks terrible, functions terribly and leaves unused all the desktop/mouse format's capabilities and potential, which USED TO BE used to the fullest on ALL (good) websites.
See here:
http://www.cigarbid.com/...tting-down-#post4304227 Basically it's the explosive popularity of mobile devices and Google working together to ruin the quality of websites for desktop users, and cause sites to not use all the best capabilities of the desktop/mouse platform, and instead dumb down all sites so they treat your desktop PC as if it had a 5-inch screen instead of a 20-inch screen, and a big fat imprecise finger instead of a single-pixel-accurate mouse pointer.
Terrible, I know, but that's what's happening. Hope that helps.
