I believe that both sides brain wash their supporters into believing things they might not believe. The perfect example of this is all democrats must believe that abortion is right. I think the party system needs to go and Americans need to vote and believe in issues based of their own research and opinions.
The only thing party systems do is create a divide in people!
However, i believe that the party system has been encrypted into the minds of all Americans and this transition would be nearly impossible
ironically, just today I was thinking about pro choice/pro life, the make-up of each sides' supporters, and how I don't feel it is a true partisan politics issue.
I am of the opinion that it really isn't as politically predetermined as we commonly assume, I see more than a scattering of dissent in each party. My feeling is that other social factors play a larger role and many just aren't vocal.
My non-scientific hearsay is based on stuff like: I know many liberal Catholics in the Boston area and that group is pretty much registered Democrat and pretty well split on abortion rights.

I also know many conservatives, perhaps bordering on Libertarians, who also back a woman's right to choose.
It's so personal and emotional, unlike issues like taxes, national security and stuff, that I feel it is more difficult for the major parties to get all the heads nodding at the same time on it.
