I want to ship a few cigars to a friend. Go to UPS and my wife runs the package into the store and comes out 5 minutes later. They asked what was in the box and she told them. They don’t ship tobacco apparently.
I honestly had no idea. Has this always been a thing? How do I get boxes of them shipped to me but I can’t ship to a friend?
What am I missing?

The correct answer for such questions they ask is "it's a book."

Exactly!! I told her next time to say it’s hairclips. God knows there’s enough of those damn things lying around here!

That violates the standard question at the post office of "anything fragile, liquid, perishable, or potentially hazardous?"

I just answer Nope...

I’ve shipped a decent amount of liquor and never had an issue with USPS. My guess is that there’s so much automation as well as a general “Who Gives a Frank” attitude amongst the workers that even if a worker suspected liquids inside the box, he / she isn’t gonna do anything about it.

^yup. It’s also a federal offense to open usps mail. Put what you want in a box and send it The workers aren’t worried about it.

Yeah, I made the mistake of telling the UPS worker I was shipping cigars, got the same thing about them not being able to ship tobacco. Although, obviously they can. But maybe that's just for dealers. I went to a different UPS and told them it was masks (Covid).

Now I just go to USPS. There's a post office not too far away with a 24-hour kiosk. Easy peasy.

Iffn you use the USPS click-n-ship there is nobody asking questions. You just drop it off. I have had more than one package of liquids get damaged and leaking in transit and smelling of booze but they still get delivered.

USPS has an exception from there no tobacco rule for "premium cigars", I bet UPS has the same thing if you push the issue.

So this isn’t a matter of safety and security, just some more roadblocks thrown at cigar smokers who may wish to ship cigars to another smoker. Can’t smoke a cigar anywhere anymore, but light up a joint and you’re ok. Can’t find a cigar app on the iPhone as they’ve refused to carry most, some of which helped locate locations you could legally smoke, but want to know the closest CBD/weed dispensary and there’s no shortage of apps.

I guess you don’t realize you can ship quite a few cigars in either a small, medium or large flat rate USPS box for a small fraction of the cost to ship via UPS.

Those flat rate boxes are sent priority mail with a tracking number and will reach 98.2% of CONUS addresses in 2 days.

As DED said above if you use the click and print service to print a shipping label you don’t even have to stand in line to drop it off. Just walk in and set the box on the counter, wave and say hello to the clerk then go on your merry way.

Tell them it's fuzzy your anal plug. They will never ask another question. Problem solved.

UPS has a laptop I ordered last week (Mar 22, 2023). Theoretical delivery was 2 to 3 days with an estimated delivery for Sat, Mar 25. I'm in central MA and it was coming from TX. On Friday it made it to Windsor, CT and on schedule for Saturday delivery. It's Monday, March 27th and tracking now says it's in Alexandria, VA.

UPS kinda sucks.

Was your friend in another state or country? I believe the good folks here have the right idea when they advise to embellish the truth a bit. Years ago UPS or FedEx actually admitted that they had a theft problem with their employees. Certain products were marked as firearms, ammunition and whatever other codes were required. People who shipped a smaller item were advised to use a larger box so employees could not easily conceal it if they elected for a five finger discount. Try shipping herbal tea next time or agricultural samples. Let your imagination wander.
