A well written piece from the UK Telegraph

It takes a kind of malignant genius to destroy California, but the state’s ruling elites are well on their way to assure its decline. If the downward spiral continues, it will stand as a testament to the insane variety of progressive policies that have driven middle and working class people, as well as numerous companies, out of the state.

No place on earth came into this century with more going for it than California. It is a naturally beautiful state, home to some of the world’s mildest climates, enormously fertile both in its land and its people. It has long been the epicenter of technology, entertainment and space exploration: the last great Western dominated industries.

Yet today California suffers among the US’ highest rates of unemployment, the highest percent living poverty and massive net outmigration. The causes here are manifold, but they start with climate policy. Ever since Jerry Brown returned to office in 2011, the state has made climate policy not just a priority, but an obsession. Virtually every major state initiative from housing and energy to economic growth hinges around climate catastrophism and the need for California to lead the battle to stop it.

These climate-centric policies are no winner for most Californians. Indeed, as the state ratcheted up its regulations, the effect has disproportionately hurt working class and ethnic minority families (roughly 40 per cent of the state’s population is Latino). The highest energy prices in continental US and draconian regulations have reduced potential employment in key blue-collar industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and home construction.

The impact of California’s regulatory regime also extends to the middle class, who pay among the country’s highest taxes, and groan under the nation’s most prolific series of regulations. By slowing and even stopping new housing growth in the less expensive periphery, California has become the state home to seven of the nation’s ten least-affordable housing markets.

Perhaps the biggest blow to the middle class has come in terms of jobs. A Hoover Institution report released last year observed that in 2020 California had only one-seventh the number of company-initiated capital projects than did the leading state, Texas. Additionally, from 2018 to 2021, 352 companies headquartered in California moved their headquarters out.

To be sure, the presence of four of the highest-valued tech firms – Meta, Google, Apple, and Nvidia – is likely to create enormous wealth for the Silicon Valley oligarchy and their satraps. But even these tech jobs are increasingly moving elsewhere. California has seen its share of the nation’s advanced-industry jobs stagnate while jobs in advanced industries to lower-income-tax states.

A shrinking middle class and a growing exodus of upper class taxpayers – who pay much of the state’s taxes – has now brought about the inevitable fiscal reckoning in the form of a record $68 billion deficit; the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office predicts continued operating deficits through 2028, a consequence of spending that has tripled on a per capita cost adjusted basis over the last fifty years. Meanwhile, prime competitor states like Texas and Florida enjoy large budget surpluses.

To be sure, California does retain some cultural advantages, and its abortion friendly policies certainly provide some edge against the draconian policies enacted in places like Florida. But the state uber-progressive policies also include less popular features such as granting undocumented immigrants, hard working or not, free emergency healthcare, as middle and working class Californians pay ever higher premiums. California also allows children to change gender without parental approval, and seeks to extract billions in reparations for slavery in a state that never allowed the possession of slaves.

These policies are depriving California of the human capital critical to its innovation economy. This is made more critical given that California’s K-12 system fails to educate; less than half meet national standards for literacy, and for African Americans, American Indians and Hispanic/Latino the figure drops to less than a third. Math results are even worse.

Not surprisingly California, which welcomed a net total of 1.7 million people from domestic migration between 2016 and 2022, now ranks towards the bottom in attracting newcomers. The erosion now includes both middle class educated professionals, whose exodus increased sharply since 2019, as well as lower income migrants. The state’s Department of Finance has already predicted that LA County will lose more than a million people in the coming years.

Is there any way to reverse these nightmarish trends and restore the California dream? Governor Gavin Newsom, the wannabe next President, certainly finds himself increasingly unpopular with Californian voters, suggesting any fixes are unlikely to be quick. The very demographic trends that the state’s policies exacerbate mean that conservative and middle of the road voters will keep leaving, while progressive oriented and government dependent state workers and the low-income will remain.

We may someday appreciate Newsom, as well as Jerry Brown, as having been relatively sane compared to what is coming next. Newsom, the consummate opportunist and long time ally of the tech oligarchy, has begun to oppose progressives on issues like keeping the state’s last nuclear plant alive and a proposed wealth tax that could further accelerate the already devastating flow of affluent people out of the state.

But Newsom’s successors seem less concerned about economic sustainability than their climate, gender, and race fixations. One highly regarded successor, Attorney General Rob Bonta, is a long time backer of a wealth tax, and a particular devotee of controversial “criminal justice reform”. The results of these policies can be seen on the streets of California’s cities. Overall the state has 30 per cent of the nation’s homeless population, with some now living in caves, while the state suffers the highest crime rate in a decade.

Don’t expect much from the state’s once proud GOP. Virtually all the levers of power seem likely to remain for the foreseeable future in the hands of progressives. Until elements of the Democratic coalition like the tech oligarchs or working-class ethnic minorities begin to bolt, there’s little chance of a political turnaround, or a meaningful restoration of the California dream.

Gavin Newsom recalls how Target clerk blamed him for California retail theft — before realizing who he was

Gavin Newsom revealed Wednesday that he once witnessed a shoplifter steal from Target without any interference from workers, one of whom blamed the California governor for emboldened criminals in the state before she realized who he actually was.

The Golden State leader recalled the awkward interaction at the start of a Zoom forum about a mental health proposition he’s backing, and as California continues to deal with a retail theft crisis, the Mercury News reported.

Newsom said he was on the Target checkout line when he and a store worker saw the thief waltz out of the store with items he didn’t pay for, according to footage posted online.

“I said, ‘why didn’t you stop him,’” Newsom said. “She goes, ‘oh, the governor.’ Swear to God, true story on my mom’s grave. ‘The governor lowered the threshold, there’s no accountability.’ I said that’s just not true.”

Newsom then said he told the clerk, who still apparently didn’t know who he was, that California’s Prop. 47 makes it a felony for property thefts totaling $950 or higher – the 10th toughest in the nation.

Newsom made the remarks Wednesday.

“No one gives a damn about that,” he said, noting the clerk still blamed the governor.

“And then she goes – she looks at me twice and then she freaks out – she calls everyone over, wants to take photos,” Newsom said – a request he apparently turned down.

“I’m like, ‘no we’re not taking a photo, we’re having a conversation, where’s your manager? How are you blaming the governor?’” he said. “And it was $380 later, and I was like ‘Why am I spending $380, everyone else can walk the hell right out?’”

The incident happened at a Sacramento-area Target, according to the governor’s office — though it’s unclear when it occurred.

Newsom has led California since 2019. Prop 47, which lowered drug and property crime penalties, was signed into law in 2014, The San Francisco Standard reported.

California Republicans cheered the unnamed clerk.

“Shoutout to this store clerk for saying to the governor’s face what every Californian has wanted to say: that he and his radical @CA_Dem buddies are to blame for CA’s surging crime,” state GOP chair Jessica Millan Patterson in a tweet.

“Sadly, Newsom still didn’t seem to take the hint,”

The Democrat unveiled various measures meant to tackle out-of-control retail theft recently, but won’t make changes to Prop 47, the Mercury News reported.

The new legislation calls on the state to expand criminal penalties while giving authorities greater tools in its fight against property theft, his office said in a statement Wednesday night.

Newsom has invested $1.1 billion in public safety since he took office, with a focus on taking on organized retail crime, his office added.

But wait...here's a little more backstory to Cali and Gruesome Newsom's record as Governor...

In-N-Out has never closed a location, until now. It cites crime as the problem

In-N-Out is permanently closing one of its restaurants for the first time ever, announcing that its Oakland location will soon shutter because of rampant crime in the California city.

The burger chain said in a statement that “despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our customers and associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies.”

The location, which has been open for nearly two decades, will close on March 24. It’s the city’s only In-N-Out and is near the airport.

Crime has indeed substantially increased in Oakland: Burglaries were up 23% and motor vehicle thefts were up 44% in 2023 compared to a year prior, according to Oakland Police Department data obtained by CNN affiliate KGO-TV.

In-N-Out said in a statement that while “several” of its locations have relocated in its 75-year history, the Oakland closure is the first restaurant it has closed.

“We feel the frequency and severity of the crimes being encountered by our customers and associates leave us no alternative,” said Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick, in the statement.

Notably, Warnick said its Oakland location was “busy and profitable,” but it can’t ask its customers or employees to “visit or work in an unsafe environment.” Affected employees, which amount to about 100, will transfer to a nearby restaurant in San Francisco or receive severance.

A diner told CNN affiliate KPIX-TV that someone broke into their car recently while they were eating inside the In-N-Out location. “They were trying to steal my vehicle, but I had a kill switch on. So they couldn’t get my vehicle, but they took all my belongings out,” the diner said.

An In-N-Out employee also told the station they’ve seen armed robberies at the restaurant’s parking lot.

Councilwoman Treva Reid said she’s been asking Oakland’s mayor’s office for more police in the area but hasn’t received the support. “We’re in a state of emergency. Should it have to take a declaration to deliver (services) when we’re living this? My district has been in crisis,” she told KPIX-TV.

In-N-Out is a privately held company with roughly 400 locations around the United States, mostly on the west coast. It made national headlines last year when it banned its employees in five states from wearing masks as part of new company guidelines that “emphasize the importance of customer service,” notably showing their smiles.

In 2021, its locations in Contra Costa county (also near Oakland) temporarily closed because it didn’t want to verify customers’ vaccination status, which was required during that time for indoor dining.

Starbucks, Target and other stores have closed in Oakland and other cities recently over concerns about crime
.

Target said in September that it was closing nine stores in major cities across four states, claiming theft and organized retail crime have made the environment unsafe for staff and customers – and unsustainable for business.

Crime rates vary from city to city, however. Nationally, violent crime fell 8.2% in 2023 for the second straight year after a rise in 2021, according to the FBI.

But crime has increased in Oakland. Violent crime increased 21% in 2023 from the year prior, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Try importing THAT in Flyover Country! All the major cities are reeling from failed DNC policies. They've had decades of control and it's only getting worse.

When you look at the Crime Map of Oakland, I don't see any reason why any business would want to locate there.
A whole lot of RED and YELLOWS
A true testament to Progressivism.

The Only Denny’s in Oakland, California is Closing After More Than 50 Years Due to Crime

Less than two weeks ago, we reported that the only In-N-Out burger restaurant in Oakland, California was closing due to crime.

Now the only Denny’s diner restaurant in the city is closing for the same reason.

This Denny’s has been in operation for over 50 years.

Rental car companies warning customers not to refuel in Oakland & San Francisco because of robberies

A man renting a car at the Oakland Airport said he was told not to refuel his rental in Oakland and San Francisco because out-of-towners have been robbed of their belongings at airport-area gas stations before returning rentals.

The warning comes as crime soars to out-of-control levels in both cities.

"The rental car checkout person at Oakland Airport says to me: please remember when bringing back your rental car, do not fill up your gas in Oakland or San Francisco because we have too many smash-and-grab robberies at gas stations. Fill it up outside the city somewhere.'" wrote Spencer Rascoff. "What the what?"

Robbers have been targeting tourists at airport area gas stations for years knowing they will not be apprehended.

A Shell gas station popular with out-of-town visitors who are returning rental cars at the Oakland International Airport has turned into a major hotspot for car burglaries and brazen snatch-and-grab robberies with thefts happening every day, oftentimes several times a day, police crime data shows.

Police have filed at least 88 theft reports in one month alone, an average of three per day, at the Shell station located at 285 Hegenberger Rd. in East Oakland. The thieves target one victim only to return hours later to steal from another unsuspecting person.

The location is popular with tourists because of the service station’s proximity to the Oakland Airport rental car center. It is also popular with thieves because they can pilfer luggage filled with valuables from the back seats or cargo compartments of rental cars.

During some thefts, thieves have sneakily opened unlocked doors and grabbed purses, luggage, and other valuables. Sometimes, they will smash windows and grab valuables that are visible. In almost all cases, they’ve sped off in awaiting getaway cars.

Had heard Oregon is a purple state. Is that more or less correct?

To Shawn’s point, seems that toxic liberal disease has infected that entire coast.

Before Covid lockdowns and the summer 2020 riots San Francisco was significantly nicer than Oakland. After…. It went way downhill and has not recovered. We basically stopped going to the city except for Giants baseball games.

Oregon has always been purple. Eastern Oregon is mostly farm land and high desert so what you’d expect politically. The coast is sparsely populated, mixed demos except Bandon which is a hot spot for “artists” and transplants. Southern Oregon (MINUS ASHLAND) is now a mix of far left, traditional Rs, Chamber of Commerce type R’s and gov employed D’s and libertarians. Central Oregon is similar with the exception being Bend which in recent times has been overrun with azzhats fleeing/retiring/working from home Portlanders.

The MURDER of the timber industry and farming has turned a once independent state into a service industry/ tourist destination.

Shoot we even used to have great democrats in this state once upon a time back when our republicans sucked more than they do now.

Currently we are burdened with a D supermajority because of 2 counties. Yes they are both 💩 holes.

One sure sign of an authoritarian government is the BANNING of opposition party candidates from elections. The authoritarian government operates under an institutional facade of democracy. Suppose it can't maintain its power through outright vote rigging. In that case, it may claim the opposition party is a threat to democracy, that it engaged in illegal peaceful protesting, so its candidates must be banned.

OFF THE BALLOT: Oregon Supreme Court Bars 10 Republican Lawmakers From Running for Reelection

by Mike LaChance Feb. 1, 2024 10:20 pm

Quote:
The Oregon Supreme Court has ruled that ten Republican lawmakers may not seek reelection because they participated in a walkout last year over a policy dispute.

According to a rule in Oregon called Measure 113, ten or more unexcused absences disqualifies one from seeking reelection.

Did you think the left would only use this tactic against Trump? Watch now as other states create new rules for the sole purpose of taking Republicans off the ballot.
