I'll always be a cigar noob I think. I only smoke a few cigars a month, maybe more if I'm on vacation.

I have tried a bunch of different cigars and for the most part, they generally seem taste the same to me. I do notice differences in strength, ease of draw. The only one I found that I can say I like for certainty is the Oliva Serie V Robusto.

I have many questions!

What would the difference be of a Serie V , Serie V Melanio and Serie V Maduro? It seems like it's the wrapper, but would I even notice that difference?

They also have Serie G and O, I assume the difference would be strength? I've had O before but don't recall how it was. The frequency of smoking a cigar makes it difficult to compare cigars.

The only way for me to really know is to smoke all three at the same time I guess.

Is the Serie V Melanio considers a strong cigar? Any recommendations on what else I could try that would be similar to the V Melanio?

Look for cigars that have the same wrapper and binder, and if possible, similar fillers.
Smoking a “few” cigars a month? Unless you have a highly refined palate (maybe you are an ice cream taster, or a Sommelier by trade), it will likely take years for you to develop your palate, be able to pick up various flavor notes, decide what type of cigars you like etc.

And yes, a Serie V is a pretty strong cigar.

A few questions:

1. How many is “a few cigars a month”?

2. What have you tried? What have you kinda liked / disliked?

You will taste the differences between the V, VMel and VMad…with or without a refined palate. Ultimately the best thing to do is buy a single or mebbe two of the VMel and VMad in the same or closest vitola to the Robusto you smoked and try them. I wouldn’t recommend smoking them back-to-back-to-back as your palate will / could be shot by the time you get to the last one. Personally I would go two days in between and iffin’ you’re gonna drink, just drink water. Lastly, take notes.

IME, the VMel is stronger than the regular V but the VMad is the strongest of the 3. Of course ymmv.

No recommendations at this point in time since you don’t, yet, know which of the 3 you prefer.

Good luck!

Wait, you guys don't peel the wrapper leaf off before you smoke the cigar? It's the WRAPPER, don't you always remove the wrapper?

Of course we do.

Yes, the only difference between the natural and maduro is the wrapper
To me the difference is subtle, but noticeable
The difference between the G, O, and V is blend, quality, and price not necessarily strength.
The melanio is probably a med/full to full strength cigar, while the V I would classify as full+, an exceptionally strong cigar.
Similar to Oliva V which to me is a really spicy cigar
Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro
AJ Fernandez Man O war

Similar to Oliva Melanio
Definitely the Oliva Master Blends 3 very similar
Then the Oliva serie O Similar but not as good
No other brand tastes similar to Melanio to me

I’ve always thought the Oliva Master Blends 3 was very similar to the Melanio. I also thought the My Father the Judge was pretty similar, but I don’t really have a “refined palate”.

Thank you all for your input. I kind of figured since I only smoke one cigar a week, maybe 2 or three a week during the summer, I might not be able to pick up the subtle differences. I'll need to pay closer attention and take notes.
There is such an enormous variety of cigars, it gets a little daunting when I go to resupply my humidor.

That latest bunch I tried were some different ACIDs. My friend loves them so I figured I would try, they're not for me.
Then there were a few Torano Exodus, La Gloria Serie R, Man O'War and some Nubs. The Man O' War - Abomination, I liked.
Of course these were completely random and the only selection criteria was the size/shape and the price.

Considering I like the Oliva Serie V Mel, what would be a Robusto size cigar that would be considered very different from that. See if I can notice the difference.

Anything not made by Oliva tastes nothing like an Oliva V Melanio to me.

If you enjoyed the LaGloria Serie R I would suggest that you try other blends from La Gloria because in my humble opinion these cigars are very fairly priced. The Spanish Press from La Gloria and the Wavell are 2 different blends that might give you a good vantage of comparison on different blends. Also, the Black Pearl Morado and the White Pearl from La Perla Cubana are very fairly priced and since they are different blends you can give your taste buds a little work out. While often times more costly, the “samplers” from San Cristobal or La Aroma de Cuba or any of the AJ Fernandez or NUB cigar makers could be a good way to help get an idea of what wrappers and fillers you like. And oh by the way, YES, the wrapper has a tremendous impact on the flavor of a cigar. That’s just my 2 cents from one noob to another.

Regular Serie V is a bit bolder while Melanio is more refined. The Maduro is pretty close to V but less bite/spice tad more sweetness from maduro wrapper. The difference is much more noticeable btw V and Melanio. I prefer Melanio. All are considered on the full-bodied side.

O and G aren’t on the same level as V in terms of consistent construction and flavor but they’re decent. O is still strong more med-full but much more one dimensional than V line. G is completely different than all being Cameroon so medium-bodied and more subdued flavor. Not my favorite when it comes to Cameroon wrappers.

For recommendations like Melanio the EP Carrillo or AJ Fernandez box-pressed stuff is good or check for stuff in similar price range using an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Can't go wrong sticking with Melanio as well.

Just to recap..would it be safe to say this is a Padron 5/3000 vs a '64 Anniversary line? I've been out of the Olivia (which was very much in my wheelhouse of Cigars!) lines for years as I was let down over time on how they aged in my humidors.

Pretty much. Possibly there's a slightly more 'goodness' gap between the 1000s and padron anni lines than the differences between the Oliva letters and the pricing reflects it.
