Is this happening only here? One county on LI has just passed a full ban on smoking in any bar or restaurant. The "other" county on LI has the same law planned as well as NY City. Yes,ALL of NY City!! Will this affect cigar bars? God I hope not!! Bar owners are already finding ways around this by turning their establishments into private clubs (wink, wink!) You pay $1 to join & receive a membership card (show your card and get $1 off your 1st drink!) Now as a private "members only" club, smoking is allowed.
Just wanted the rest of the country to know the nonsense that is going on here in NY! So, lets here what you think!!

Nope, the same morons from California that invaded NY also came down to Florida. Seems that if you can buy enough votes then you can put just about anything on a ballot!

I believe this will go the same way as Gore. Out the door.

i think the solution to this is that everyone should start chewing tobacco. you can then either carry a clear bottle around with your tabacky spit in it or just spit on the ground. maybe the "lesser of two evils" will win out...

The smoking ban in California closed a lot of great Cigar Bars and has really affected the retail cigar establishments due to ridiculous taxes being thrown on top of tobacco products!
Not to get too political on this issue, but the six tax legislation is always driven by Democrats! Why is that? I wonder....

Charlie, it is because they are looking for money, and they know they can bleed those stinky cretin smokers who won't get any sympathy from the rest of the general public.

This is true about looking for money, but I have another burning question, if the California State Lottery reason for being is to benefit the school system throughout the state and now the latest tax levied on cigarettes and tobacco in general was for education..................why doesn't California have better schools and a better school system? Where the hell does all the money go that is supposed to be funneled into education in this state?

Joe, if that does get passed it'll close private clubs too! Country clubs, bars, cigar stores...the list goes on! The only way you'll be able to enjoy a cigar is in your own garage away from the Thoughtpolice!

The cigar stores also have a new set of rules which prohibit having smoking products within reach of anyone under the age of 18 (soon to be raised to 21).

A lot of them now have to put up a divider and not allow open access to their humidors. The Cheaper! store chain now has a counter separating the front from the rest of the store where the goodies (humidor) are. Some clerks will let you go in unescorted...most won't.

Personally , I hate having some pimply faced, chain smoking, college dropout staring over my shoulder, while trying to push bundles of floor sweepings which were rolled in mexico and passed off as the house brand. Saying crap like, "Man you gotta try those. They're awesone dude."

I prefer to look at what I am going to buy carefully. Checking for the right feel and lack of bug holes. (Still never really have seen one).

It's getting to the point where you have to walk in and ask for a brand and size and the cigar "dude" with a Hava-Tampa hanging out of his mouth, will step into the humidor to hand pick one for you.

One of the reasons I don't go there very often, except they have stuff I can't get elsewhere. It's getting sorry and stupid in this state. I'll stick with my online orders and occasional multi brand samplers I can find around the net.

NY? I live in California, where the men are women and the women are men. Where our official language appears not to be English anymore. Where ANYone can have a driver's license. Where they shoot first, about 36 times, and then ask questions. Where we pay more for gas than anywhere else in the country. Where MY taxes are paying for Democratic payrolls. Where I have to fight on almost a daily basis for my son's education rights (that the school district prohibits any of their employees from informing parents of). Where skateboarding is a crime.

Where you have to, ahhh, I could go on...but can you smoke where you please? Hell no. Not even outdoors at the ballpark. I'm not a cigarette smoker. I hate it in fact. I hate the smell of it. I hate it blowing my direction. It just absolutely annoys me. But to take that right away is just plain wrong. There's enough wrong in this world...let the smokers be!

e-chick, you could not have said it any better! We have too damn many politicians looking out for our good and well being, while lining their pockets with major chunks of cash! Wish the tobacco companies had gotten to them first! Especially, "Both Hands Out" Gray Davis, our esteemed Governor!

Being a fellow New Yorker I share your pain. I used to enjoy going to local cigar shops to sample new smokes, and basically "chew the fat" with some friends, but due to the high tabacco tax and new no smoking laws, it's very difficult and just downright expensive. I feel sorry for these cigar stores which many contemplate closing or going out of business. Seems like my only available location to enjoy a good smoke is my own front porch that, now because of the weather is also an uncomfortable place to smoke. I've written several letters to the state and sign many petitions, but to no avail. Most of my cigar purchases are mostly online, or dring 1-3 hours to NJ or PA for decent cigar prices. Still good places to smoke them are scarce. I'm fed up!!

I thought I read where the tobacco stores and cigar shops would be granted the Ok to allow smoking beacuse tobacco products were the primary business. Unlike a resturant or bar where food and drink was the primary business.

In California as long as Tobacco products are primary business, they are allowed to smoke in the cigar shops! Isn't that nice of them, but a store like High Times in CostaMesa/Newport Beach is primarily a wine shop (and one of the best in the entire state)you cannot smoke in their most excellent cigar area!

God,l hate the Smoke Police and tree huggers who thought so much of our welfare to get these laws passed!

In Florida(if the law passes!)you can't smoke in an area where people work. Seems 2nd hand smoke is the main push. The ads that are running are just plain lies. I got a feeling that it might pass. People here in Florida don't have a good track record when it comes to elections.
