Ever check out the cigar ratings on Cigar Aficionado? Is it just me or do those guys come on a bit snobbish with their "papery" this and their "earthy with hints of leather/coffee/spice/vanilla/gym shorts"? Okay, I suppose the only way to describe a flavor is to compare it to something. But what do they mean by "finish", as in dry finish/papery finish/short finish? How can a cigar have a short finish? Don't it depend on how big the cigar is? Every cigar I ever smoked was finished when it got too short.

it's all bull****. you know whether a cigar is good for you to smoke a lot better than the "experts."

i usually taste chocolate and mint if i am smoking a cigar and eating bryers chocolate mint ice cream at the same time.

I hate to admit it efm, but I read those ratings and they used to influence what I purchased. If you ask a retailer, they will tell you that CA has a great deal to do with sales of a particular 'gar. Now I take what they say with a grain of salt.

By the way, my wife says I have a short finish, what does that mean?

I think the finish is how long the taste stays in your mouth before going bad. The CA guy (Shencken?)published a wine magazine first. A lot of the tasting criteria went to the cigar mag. I imagine the cigar makers are grateful for the business generated. But I bet they laugh their butts off at the reviews.

Movie "experts" or critics tend to like a lot of garbage. Moulan Rouge, In the Bedroom, and The English patient come to mind. I've seen these movies and thought they were the biggest pile of $hit.

Critics of any genre (music, wine, movies, cigars) tend to think they are above everyone else and their opinion is the only thing that matters and we should all follow blindly. When in fact half the time the average Joe is thinking "What the he!! are you talking about"

Don't listen to ANYBODY but yourself.

Hmmmmm...I always thought a "short finish" meant that you put it out early because it got hot, harsh etc.

If I could remember who said it first, I'd give 'em credit, but the best response I ever saw on the board came from someone who said he never tasted chocolate, leather, berries, olive brine or any other thing one sees spoken of in reviews ... said all his cigars tasted like tobacco ...

Mine too, and that's the way I like it.
