I'm in the market for some life insurance. I'm debating whether to fib and say I'm an non-smoker for the lower premium. Is it asking for trouble? Could an insurance company deny a claim if they found out I fibbed? What about medical insurance?

I more honest than otherwise but I hate to be painted with the same brush as a guy who smokes a pack of Camels for breakfast especially as I am a very light smoker.

it is a material misrepresentation. that means the insurance company has the right to void your policy back to inception, and they will as soon as you turn in a claim that they think has anything to do with smoking, ie. cancer of the lips tongue, lungs, etc.

don't lie. if you agent tells you to fudge, change agents.

Rick is right (that just doesn't sound correct does it?)... you will just be cheating yourself and more importantly your beneficieries.

It would be accurate AND better sounding to say that Rick is correct ...

My wife and I are in the midst of a protracted dealing with our insurance company ... she has a legitimate claim, they are paying, but with reluctance and with great care ... knowing the wringer that you can be put through on a legitimate claim, I can only imagine what it would be like if our claim were based on falsehoods ... worse than how much more difficult it would make it, would be the realization that the insurance could be voided and leave us with an immense exposure that would simply ruin us ... it would be worse than having to live under a freeway overpass ... because of her condition, a voiding of the insurance would be a very real threat to MrsS life.

BTW ... while mine is a somewhat informed judgement based on my somewhat limited personal experience, Rick's is a highly informed judgement based on extensive professional experience. He IS correct.

Hey email me, depending on the type of smoking you do you can get non tobacco rates with some companies. I am a broker in Illinois and may be able to help out.
