In discussion with Charlie earlier today he joked about some sports teams names.
What significance does a Tiger or a Lion have with Detroit?
There are many others, some that had significance prior to relocation such as Utah Jazz or LA Lakers.
What about other pro sports teams?
Any good, little-known reasons for their names?
Let's hear 'em.

the Chicago Bears were originally the Staley Starchmakers, named for the guy who owned them, Staley of Staley Starch. The Kansas City Chiefs were the Dallas Texans. The Dodgers were from Brooklyn and originally were named for trolley dodgers, which everybody in Brooklyn was known as cuz of all the trolleys.

The Astros in the 60's were the Colt 45's cause everyone in Texas has a gun. Before that, in the 40's there was a minor league time, the Houston Buffaloes, cause back then, everyone owned a buffaloe.

The Kansas City Chiefs were not named after Indian Chiefs, but the mayor at the time Lamar Hunt moved them from Dallas to KC was most instrumental in "doing the deal" and Lamar Hunt named the Texans, the Chiefs after his nickname (I cannot remember his name, but maybe another KC fan can)!

Among my favorite names of teams from Colleges: Univ of Oklahoma Sooners, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas Jayhawks, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas Longhorns, Purdue Boilermakers to name a few from colleges!

Professional teams: Colorado Rockies, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, California Angels, New York Yankees, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots.

Minor league names: Carolina Mudcats is the all time!

Great names no longer associated with teams: Chicago Fire, New Orleans Jazz, Atlanta Flames, Washington Senators.

Funniest name: University of Santa Cruz Bananna Slugs or the Univeristy of Irvine Anteaters (named after BC comic strip anteater)!

Charlie, did you know that about 30 years ago, when Stanford University decided to no longer be the "Indians" in order to become more PC, they asked the student body to vote on the subject ... the students voted overwhelmingly to adopt the fir tree that is contained within the "S" logo and call their team the "Trees" ... school officials, not much caring for the idea, announced that the winning name was "Cardinal" (as in their team color rather than the bird) ... the students remained unabashed however, and at games there is a mascot that dances about dressed in a tree costume ...

'gater, word is that the owner of the Utah Jazz has agreed to speak with the New Orleans Hornets about letting them have the Jazz nickname back (for those who don't know, the old New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah, but inexplicably kept the nickname) ... interestingly enough, since Bees, Buzz and Stingers have all been nicknames of the local minor league baseball operation in SLC a swap of nicknames might therefore make more sense at BOTH ends of that deal ...

There is a Minor League team in Kannapolis, NC that used to be called the Kannapolis Bollweavels. Before his untimely death, Dale Earnhart's company bought a percentage of the team, and they changed the name to the Intimidators.
