Ok, guys & gals, I need to blow off a little steam, so thanks in advance for your indulgence.
Do you have any cohorts that can claim the above quote? Does it tick you off?
I guess I am just sick and tired of "cigar snobs". The guys that will sit around the club and talk about the next box they are ordering, how they "really don't smoke Dominicans any more" and have the gall to ask others what they are smoking and look down on it if its not a Cuban. I have been smoking cigars for 20 years and I damn well smoke what I like. I don't smoke to impress others or have to smoke a certain cigar to feel better about myself.

There... I've vented. I feel better now! Any thoughts from others on the subject?

Jefferson, The fact is that the largest part of the bell curve is filled with people who are screwed up. I especially sympothize with your comment about those who connect their self-esteem with status symbols. They are just ignorant. I would be lying if I told you that it never got to me. (or could you tell by the first three sentences?)

Conspicuous consumption is never a pretty sight, in wine, automobiles, or cigars. Scott Fitsgerald said "living well is the best revenge" or maybe it was Oscar Wilde... anyway, he didn't say "and don't forget to rub their nose in it." LG

My take is if that is all they smoke who cares. I smoke what I like and could give a rats @ss about what anyone else smokes.

My experience lately has been that most Cubans are nowhere near the quality that the price tag suggests.
I have a few customers who insist on shopping for the most expensive cigars instead of what I insist is the best.

In the end they are generally uneducated smokers who instead of taking the time to learn a little about their passion simply equate money with quality. These are the same people who will spend $15 for a glass of wine when the $5 house wine is just as good. ;)

I've met a few of the "I only smoke Cubans" folks. But there are some who do only smoke Cubans who are not snobs. Cubans give them the flavor profile they enjoy most. There are many out there that look down their noses at you for what you are smoking, and there are some who are regular folks, like you and me.

I bet there are just as many people out there (if not more) who say, "I don't drive anything but Ford". Doesn't make them a snob. Just means that that is what they like.

They may pay a lot for a Mustang when you can buy just as nice a car for less. Doesn't mean its wrong that is just their preference.

Be happy with what you choose to smoke and don't worry about what anyone else likes or dislikes.

Yup, that's exactly my point, and that's why it bothers me when somebody looks down their nose if I or others are smoking anything other than a Cuban. I think the "cuban snobs" would be well served by your advice, and that was the original gist of my post.

SteveS,

How'd you keep the ribs from poking through the rolling papers?

If I could smoke nothing but Cubans, then I would. First, however, they would have to become legal. Next the price would have to come down quite a bit. Since neither of these two things are happening soon, then I will go on smoking cigars from other countries. Since I started smoking cigars, I have never had a bad Cuban cigar; but I have had many crappy Dominican, Honduran, Nicaraguan, Mexican, Phillipine, etc. cigars. Granted the number of Cubans that I have smoked numbers in the dozens (low dozens even), and the numbers of other cigars that I have had numbers in the thousands. Part of the fun of smoking cigars is trying something different. Buying a five pack of something in hopes of getting your next favorite cigar. Sometimes you get something great, sometimes you get a turd. No matter how you look at it, it is great and there is no point to giving someone else grief over what they are smoking.

Most of the cigar snobs that I've run into have a few other things about them that I don't care for as well. Usually they're people that I would avoid for multiple reasons.
However, I am wonderful and everyone loves me so I can say this.

Truth is, probably nobody smokes only Cubans, even if they try very hard to. First, most of the Cubans in this country are counterfeit. Second, it is a not very well kept secret that the Cuban manufacturors use tobacco from the other islands in their cigars, perhaps up to 85% non-Cuban tobacco. Don't ask for my sources. Believe what you want, smoke what you like, can the BS, and herf on.

Here is a verbatim quote from my unnamed source, for your reading entertainment: "... wish I had a recorder with me when I meet with some of the big boys and you guys could hear what is said. You would be embarrassed to ever spend more then 5 bucks on a cigar again. And Cubans. Man this is the best laugh you can have. All Cuban cigars are made with over 85% of Central American tobacco today and have been for more then 10 years."

Of course, this could just be more internet fiction. Happy Thanksgiving!

Hell I am Canadian and could smoke all the Cubans I want but don't because there is better value and taste available from D.R., Nic and Honduras. Let the Cuban snobs pay 4-5 times more for their smokes and let me enjoy my personal favs.

I wouldn't even try to smoke Cubans. I much prefer beef. Anyway it's illegal. Jeffrey Dahmer might give it a whirl, but I prefer animal products.

Maybe if I were stuck on top of the Andes following a plane crash a Cuban or two on the barby wouldn't look so bad.
