Do I need to remove the celophane wrappers when I store cigars in a humidor? I've seen both yes and no but you guys seem to be the experts. Thanks

This question has been answered so many times, I don't even want to venture on how many. Probably the most asked question of all time ... check the archives.

The concensus? No one can agree ...

Keep in mind they will age better 'naked', but if you have differnent cigars together in the same humidor without dividers ... cello will keep the flavors from 'marrying' to a certain extent.

Just for the record (and because I was curious) I 'Searched the Boards' for all messages pertaining to 'cello' ... and in the last three years or so, there have been 152 posts relating to this subject ...

... wow!

Double Wow!!!

To cello or not to cello, that is the question! I prefer to have cello off....but others will argue the merits of cello on!!!

It will go on and on and nobody will ever completely answer the question!

I always keep the cello on to protect the wrapper. Cigars probably age better without cello, but I'd rather have an aged cigar with an intact wrapper than a better-aged cigar with wear and tear.

152 ... does that count this post or would this be 153 ?? ... wow, indeed!!

Cello Off ... they do age better, quicker, but can suffer damage to the wrapper easier than w/cello on. I used to take the cello off every cigar.

Cello On ... cello retards the flow of moisture, in to the cigar as well as out from it ... BUT, it is not a vapor barrier ... over time, the cello will make little or no difference. It will, however, serve to give some added protection to the wrapper ... I've been leaving cello on lately as an experiement and almost half my cigars have cello on ...

As for flavors 'marrying' ... a VERY minmal consideration unless you're talking about actual flavored cigars in which case cello won't do the job ... you need a completely seperate humidor (although IMHO, giving them to someone who promises not to smoke them upwind from you is an even better solution) ... never buying flavored cigars at all is the optimum method of dealing with them.

Rick, I was advised to take mine out of the tube if you are going to store them for long periods of time due to the fact that not all tubes are airtight. In most cases the tubes are not airtight and precious cigars will dry out especially if there is a dry humidification pad in the tube.

Instead of removing the cello, can I just poke holes in the cello so they age properly? A friend of a friend of mine did that with some Cohiba Esplendidos that he bought in Mexico and said they smoked fine. Of course he removed them first from the really cool glass topped box that he got them in...

The original release of the Indian Tabac Limited Reserve had 1/8" holes in the cello. I thought that was a pretty good idea, you get the protection of the cello while letting air circulate around the cigar. The new bundled version does not have the hole in the cello, of course the price difference is about $100!

To put an end to this question I bought a new humidor and filled it with cellos. In a couple of years I will be ale to tell you if they aged or not. Just check back with me in December 2004.
Until then, stop asking! Or Hillary will be the next President.
