What do you do when a cigar in your humidor is getting bids higher than the price you paid for it? Do you smoke it or save it? If you smoke it, do you smoke it at the price you paid or the bid it's attracting now? If you save it, why?

As soon as you drive out of the lot the value decreases a substancial amount. Your used product will never attain the value of the newer models coming out. Sorry.

You cut it in half, then save the first half and smoke the second half. or save the second half and smoke the first half. or save both and smoke them later. hmmmmm what was the question again.... I smoked the first half already.

Sorry Slim but when the guys post says:

"If you smoke it, do you smoke it at the price you paid or the bid it's attracting now?"

I didn't consider it a very serious question.

GetYourOwn...not serious? I'll rephrase the question. If you had two of the same cigar: one you paid $1 for and another you got for $2 (it happens all the time on CBid), and you smoke one, do you smoke the $1 or the $2? It's an inventory question.

Considering the re-phrased question, M, you might want consider smoking two at the same time (for example if they're robustos you could consider two to be the equivalent of a double-corona) in order to dollar-cost average them, so they would be 1.50 each in your example. If you smoke the more expensive one slower, you could actually end up with a rebate.

...the same "cost averaging" method would apply to three or more but that would be a tough puff.

smoke 'em if you've got 'em. You can't put a price on personal enjoyment and satisfaction.

depends on whether you are using LIFO or FIFO cigar accounting practices.

I dont care what they go for after I buy them. I dont plan on selling them so what does it matter? I usually buy 5-packs,smoke one & put the others in the humi for a little aging. Why worry about somthing that you cant change? Maybe if I bought a box of expensive premiums, I may look for curiousity later to see how I did. But for cheaper smokes, buy em, smoke em, & forget about em!!

PS: Im scalping tix to the E-Chick vs Slim Match-up. Let me know if you havent gotten yours!!

Strictly FIFO until about a year ago when I began a bit of LIFO methodology for the first time and now have a number of year+ old smokes in my humi and have been trying to add to that quantity on a gradual basis ...

LOL @ Rookie ... yeah, well I'd never have thought of what I was doing with my cigars as a LIFO or FIFO issue, but I DO understand what they mean and when someone else raised the point in what I thought was a humorous way, I responded in what I hoped would be humorous style ... guess it didn't work so good, huh?

LIFO means "last in, first out" and FIFO is "first in, first out" ... they're acronyms that are used by accountants regarding inventory management ... in common, everyday practice, the grocery store, for example, rotates it's stock so the older stuff is moved out first ... FIFO ... if you buy some cigars and smoke them right away while leaving older ones to age even more, that's LIFO ...
