This will be first time to Jamaica as a cigar smoker, do cubans exist there, if so, what would you buy without having to cash in a CD?

Only buy Cuban cigars from 'La Casa del Habanos' (a government run store) or you are 'rolling the dice' ...

... counterfeit Cuban cigars are rampant in Jamacia, from what I've been told by many of my friends and acquaintances who have gone there.

Be very careful when leaving the resort when not on a guided tour. It will cost you a little more but worth it to avoid the trouble if you do your cigar shopping at the airport comming and going home.

I was able to buy 14 genuine Cohiba Esplendidos in Jamaica. You just need to do some research and KNOW what to look for (including the box they came in).

I was very lucky. I didn't until I came home and found this site. I was referred to several other sites and was able to authenticate my cigars and cigar box that they came in. Don't be fooled, but don't be scared off either!

Ask a taxi driver to take you to the gift shop above the Montego Bay airport...the cigars aren't in the open. You'll have to ask, and insist on ISOM's. Look at everything in detail. Turn up your nose if you have to. You'll find them...No problem mon! You can legally bring back one box of Cuban cigars for personal consumption. Insist that they give you the box with purchase (unless you are only buying one or two)!

Jamaica is one of my favorite places in this world...have a blast! Yahmon!

I'll do a search asap and let you know about a great Jamaican website with recent trip reports and locals that post...it's very informative.

If you're going then the ultimate prize to bring back isn't an ISOM cigar. It's Sangster's Coconut Rum. The everloving nectar of the Gods! You used to buy the stuff on all of the islands now it's only on Jamaica(where it's produced!). You can't go wrong with the stuff. If it were me, and I wish it was...I'd buy cases of the stuff and ship them back home UPS or FedEx while I was over there AND bring back a case with me on the plane!

Enjoy. Don't stay off the compounds after nightfall!

You cannot legally bring one box of Cuban cigars back into the US from Jamaica.

..I think the last Macanudo was rolled in Jamaica in late 2000 or early 2001. I suggest that while you're in Jamacia you hop a plane or boat to Cuba. Remember to leave a $20 in your passport.

I have an entire cut 'n paste page from the following website:

http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/travel/cigars.htm

You will see if you completely read it that "Only persons returning from Cuba after a licensed visit there are permitted to bring Cuban cigars into the United States". The website actually highlights some words...here it is.......

*The revival of interest in cigars and cigar smoking underscores the need to remind the public of the prohibitions that have been in place for many years with respect to cigars of Cuban origin. The number of attempted importations of Cuban cigars into the United States is rising and because dealing in such cigars may lead to Treasury enforcement actions, the public should be aware of - and make every effort to observe - the prohibitions which are in effect.

Only persons returning from Cuba after a licensed visit there are permitted to bring Cuban cigars into the United States, provided the value of such cigars does not exceed $100 US dollars and the cigars are for that individual's personal use and not for resale. All other importations of Cuban cigars are illegal. All offers to buy or sell such cigars in the United States involve cigars that were imported illegally. Contrary to what many people may believe, it is illegal for travelers to bring into the United States Cuban cigars acquired in third countries (such as Canada, England, or Mexico).

It is also illegal for U.S. persons to buy, sell, trade, or otherwise engage in transactions involving illegally-imported Cuban cigars. The penalties for doing so include, in addition to confiscation of the cigars, civil fines of up to $55,000 per violation and in appropriate cases, criminal prosecution which may result in higher fines and/or imprisonment.

These prohibitions are applicable to all goods of Cuban origin and are an important element of the comprehensive program of economic sanctions against the Cuban Government which have been in place since 1963. Those sanctions have had the support of the last seven Administrations.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), administers the embargo of Cuba. Suspected embargo violations may be reported telephonically to OFAC's Enforcement Division at (202) 622-2430 or via facsimile at (202) 622-1657.*

HOPE THAT HELPS....

Thanks all for your good advice, maybe my best option is to enjoy some good smokes while I am there, if I can find them. While the smoke looms and the rum is good I will think of you all and how you make my three nights go so fast when I am bored. God I love this site.

Remember this...Sangster's Coconut Rum. Stock up. Buy lots of it. Once you get back you can't get it here or about anywhere else. If you remember...and want to be a saint...pick one up for me. I'll make it worth your while.

DrMaddVibe -- while in Puerto Rico, I had some really good Coconut Rum ... but I can't remember the name.

I also had Lemon Rum, Orange Rum, Passion Fruit Rum ...

Slim, I think I've had the same brand. I too can't remember the name but it had a blue and yellow label. The passion fruit rum was good, but I'm telling you this Sangster's stuff IS the real deal. It has little bits of sugarcane in the bottom. The coconut flavor isn't that suggary crud like Malibu or Cocoribe. It's almost like someone cracked open a fresh coconut and poured strong rum over it into a bottle.
