Trent Lott stepped down as Senate Majority Leader today and while I think he did the right thing, I would like to see the Democrats held accountable for their misstatements!!!! How say you guys and gals?

I am a devout independant. I vote for the person I think will do the best job be he Republican or Democrat.

What I find interesting is that, no matter the party, it always gets down to, well yes he did wrong but the Dems/Repubs did this or they did that.

Shouldn't it just be he screwed up and has to pay the price, end of story? I find that particulalry so in this case because the real pressure to step down came from his own party.

This is just my opinion, but I'm sticking to it... until I change my mind.

it burns my butt that the democrats time & time again get away with everything . remember Sen .Byrd saying the n word on national t.v ? I don't think Sen . Lott meant anything racist when he was praising Sen . Thurmond , just some over enthusiastic a_ _ kissing

Charlie, I think he did the right thing for the party.

I think its too bad how everyone piled on him so hard. Dont get me wrong. What he said wasn't right, but it's the way he said it. He should have clarified himself more. I really dont think he truly wants segrigation, or he could never gone this far in politics.

If Lott really had a racist background, why didnt the "Left" or media jump on it when they first learned of him being Majority Leader? They always do on any little thing they can. Why wait till Storms party?

Well its over. He did whats right. We dont need to spend so much energy on this issue.

Just my opinion.

I hate the fact that our world today takes so much sh*t out of context. Like Harley said, he got a little excited during his speech about Thurmond. There isn't a person on our soil that hasn't said something they thought was ok, and someone else took offense, even when none was meant. All of those bureaucrats on the hill are so power hungry, wanting to move up, they all jumped at the opportunity, even his own party. I think that he should have stuck to his guns, and quit the Senate all together, allowing the balance of power in the Senate to shift. That would have shown those asses.

I've been reading about how the Bush administration orchistrated the unseating of Lott to get a buddy in control of the Senate. Okay, any president want allies in Congress but to use such dirty back-stabbing tactics is pretty low. Those comments Lott made amounted to nothing more than saying nice things about a collegue at his birthday/retirement party. If a Democrat had said those things it'd be a non-issue and we'd never have heard about it.

Lott is going to blame his 'friends' in the White House and the Republican party. He is right, in a way. But he is wrong. What he said was a very stupid thing for a saavy politician to say. The Democrats would have loved for him to stay on. Sort of like the Republicans would love to run against Al Gore next time. It would have been a disaster for the Republicans had he not stepped down. It's a bit of a disaster either way and the Dems love it.

El,

Good one, and right on the mark!

What was said, was said. Nobody put words into his mouth, except for himself. In this digital age to think that one can speak in public and hold a position like that and get away with it is a laughable joke! To think that he meant anything else is to take what the Civil Rights Movement and Abraham Lincoln stood for in disregard. We as a civilized nation have moved so far as to stumble unto what was a divisive issue and trivialize it.

I believe that by stepping down is a step towards breathing life into what this country really is about. Sometimes taking a step backwards brings you closer to reality. The Democrats have had ample chances to show that redemption could be shown through honorable means, but have slapped the public with an entitlement that isn't theirs. The playing of the "race card",social entitlements and class warfare serve the common good of no one. Their retort is to simply worm back to the left issues that have destroyed other governments.
