Question: If you had a large group of friends coming over for a party, and you wanted to try introducing them to the wonderful world of cigars, what brand would you choose? Better before or after the cocktails or dinner?

put a humidor filled with any kind of crap you have and say "after diner, why don't we go --- and have a cigar."

bring in the humidor and let them pick something so have at least twice as many cigar as men guests. a few women will join you and treat them the same as the men. "here, help yourself. let me cut the end and help you light it."

Macanudo coronas. Taste in cigars is an evolutionary process. If you start them with one of your favorites, they are going to stub it out halfway and you are going to cry. Macanudos are mild and perfectly constructed.

And flavorful. After dinner.

Well, depends on the party. You can do as some have suggested as long as you know those that do appreciate a good cigar and those that don't/won't.

OR: either buy a cheap bundle and some counterfiet Fuente bands, or pick up a box of these trilogy's.Then I believe everybody is happy and your reputation is still in tact. Hell they're new enough to be trendy, not expensive and pretty damn good smokes to boot.

good luck,JJ

Introduce a large party to cigars? Forget about it. Those that like cigars may or may not like what you give them and the other 98 percent will definately hate what you give them if they even try it. And unless you take you large party of guests outdoors you'll have people turning green and feeling sick and leaving mad.

I think if your friends are total rookie cigar smokers, then I bet you will have more luck with a variety of flavored cigars.
Im probably gonna catch hell for suggesting this! They are usually not too strong for a beginner. You then dont waste any of your good smokes, and you can still smoke a real cigar!

My first cigar was a Partagas, and I loved it. It was a good introduction to cigar smoking for me.

That's a toughie! A whole group! I hope you know this group well enough to open your humidor! I'd just let 'em know that it's a cigar themed party and BYOC! That way you'll have a group that'll enjoy the herf and you won't have any stubbed out Opus X's,PAM's or Bucanero's to cry over.

I'd just reserve a table at a sports bar and herf there while eating wings and drinking beer while watching the game!

Tough one, most of my smoking buds were slowly brought into the group one by one. Sometimes they saw me light one up and mentioned their enjoyment, sometimes I mentioned it in passing and got a similar reaction.
I've never tried to introduce it to a large group at once... I know some of my friends wouldn't appreciate my thoughtfulness when I suddenly changed the "small-talk cocktail party" to a herf.

Actually, I could see all the girlfriends going home and leaving the guys to smoke and play cards or watch a game... this idea may be useful afterall...

Put out several types of smokes and accompany them with a list of descriptions. You can just cut and paste them from your favorite online cigar reviews. That way everyone will know what to expect before choosing a cigar.
ps. If you print out the list and place it in a frame it looks very professional.

the cheapest crap you can find. Most will never again attempt to try smoking a cigar. For those who show interest, grace them with a finer smoke later. Plus, I always love the one guy who says "now this is an outstanding cigar" after I hand him a macanudo.

Wany ...

I wouldn't waste a Madanudo on my next door neighbor ... don't misunderstand me, I'm not a Mac lover by a long ways, but my neighbor is totally non-ndiscerning .. he likes wine that comes in a box and gave the same "this is an excellent cigar" pronouncement to a Centurion I gave him ..

dunno if you ever tried one of THOSE, but I'd take a Lone Wolf with a smile before I'd smoke another of those ... at least Lone Wolf is without taste ... the Centurion, IMHO, is pretty much as tasty and easy to smoke as a 7" length of 3/4" galvanized pipe with a cap on both ends ... by far, the worst burning and worst tasting excuse for a cigar I eve tried in all my cigar years ...

Arturo Fuente Curlyheads are a decent smoke for a little over a buck each. And the nice thing is any leftovers are still decent enough to enjoy yourself.

Good choice penzt8.. I have a few of these in my huim and give to friends when they ask for a smoke. These ARE good cigars. Only problem is being a short fill cigar, tend to get alot of tobacco in my mouth. I believe the Curlyhead Deluxe is long fill but a little more $.

As always. I go the Macanudo route. I haven't had a rookie smoker complain about Macanudo, unless he/she just doesn't like cigars.

Partagas is also a good introductory cigar. Save your better stuff for those that know and can handle it.

What time is dinner?

I use Macs for newbies. Mild, good quality. That's for folks who are serious about wanting to try a cigar and want to learn to appreciate one. Usually the same ones who want to learn about good wines. For the "box-o-wine" crowd I toss 'em Cojimars, Sinatras, Lone Wolf ... just something they can hammer on and feel like they're doing something. They're usually too drunk to know the difference anyway.
