Any of youze guys Ashton freaks? Went out to the smoking room after chow to try out an Ashton Cabinet #3. It smoked good for a few minutes and then the business end gummed up with that yucky tobacco juice. I trimmed the end a little more with the cutter but it gummed up again. And again. Now it's about 40 degrees in the smoking room so I thought maybe it'd help to keep the cigar warm which I did by holding it near a radiant heater. That did seem to work and it smoked okay after that. Anybody have that experience? I haven't been having this problem with other cigars.

I know it's premature to judge a cigar after trying only one...but my impression so far is thumbs down. The flavor was okay but not great. Had high hopes for this brand. For the money I could have bought something Habanos and I almost always LOVE something Habanos.

The one Ashton I tried was out of a 5 pack of aged maduro. Beautiful, well made cigar, just... Slightly too mild for me. Would have been great if I had paid less for it, but, being so highly regarded I traded the other four away.

efm : I smoke Aston VSGs and I enjoy them immensely. I heard a rumor that when they make the Cabinet #3 they add in some Gummy Bears although I can't say for sure it's true. JonR

I don't care for the regular Ashton line as they are too mild. I prefer the VSGs on occasion as they are quite pricey. However with that said, I don't think you can find a better sun-grown smoke, unless maybe it's a PAM or PAN (I give the PAM a slight edge). I've never had a bad VSG over the years, but I prefer the Illustion or Corona Gorda or an occasional Spellbound. The Enchantment needs some significant box aging to bring it up to snuff...IMHO of course...

I love 'em. You can get a bad cigar in any brand, some more than others. The Ashton (natural, vintage, maduro and VSG) is a super smoke in the bigger rings. Because the're close to the top of the price range, you might pick up one that's sat on one side too long, or been passed along to a reseller once or twice. Becuase, IMHO, they tend to be drier than other rolls, I let them sit for awhile. I store everything in humdified space: singles and boxes. A box of Doubles started out poorly, but improved the longer I babied them. A box of Prime Ministers did the same thing (burning unevenly) until I rolled them about for a month or so. I've never had the "gummy bear" problem. What were you drinking?

I love the aged maduros, especially the #10, but they are overpriced for what they are IMO

laxman...If I can get any Ashton for under $4 I'm pleased. Yes, it happens. If I can any of the maduros under $5, I happy. If I can get any VSG under $10, I know I'm dreaming.
