Restaurants that don't allow Cigar smoking

Just taking a census here. I live in western Wisconsin (close proximity to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul) and there are some great eating establishments that I like to frequent, unfortunately a lot don't allow cigar smoking. Most of these same places do not allow pipes or clove cigs either. I cannot count how many managers I have talked with on their justification of this and usually get the same response "the smell is offensive to some" DUH, the smell is all they can bank on, and last I checked most cigars smell a heck of a lot better than any cigarette I have smelled. I myself do not smoke cigarettes but would think that they are worse than any cigar I know of (aside from a few select dog rockets). Aside from an all out boycott of these establishments it doesn't look like there will be much we (or I) can do. Many people just "assume" they cannot smoke a cigar or pipe in a restaurant so they dont ask why or why not. I am attempting to rally my fellow cigar smokers and have them directly address this issue. My wife at times dreads trying a new place with me because she knows that I am going to pop the question right after the Host(ess) pops the smoking or non-smoking question. All public places have some type of ventilation system, why not invest just a bit more and make it more attractive. After all the majority of cigar smokers do tend not to be shy when spending money. (And Im definately not saying Im rich by no means)

Appreciate the feedback, I like to know how others are dealing with this.

I agree with ya Al. I hate to go into a place and see a sign that says "No Cigar or Pipe Smoking". I can't figure why. I know the smoke from a cigar is very heavy but what about the smoke from 20 people smoking cigarettes at once??? Cigar and pipe smoke usually smells better than cigarette smoke. I quit smoking cigarettes about 7 yrs. ago and now only smoke cigars.
Smoking is smoking, no matter what! How can they ban one and not the other?
There should be 2 signs... "Smoking Permitted" or "No Smoking"!!! Let the patron decide whether to stay or go!!

Can't tell you where to go, but can tell where to stay away from... California. We have ashtrays permanently mounted at the state line. No smoking in bars, restaurants, public buildings, your mother's house, dog house, hen house, out house... sorry. Channeled Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive for a minute.

Most establishments, OK almost all, that allow smoking cigarettes have been smelling cigarette smoke for so long, they don't know what pure tobacco from a cigar smells like. And you are right, most won't let you, even in a phu#$%ing bowling alley! The rancid smell of cigarettes reeks in these places. There is an Alfred's Restaurant in the DC area I went to once and they have a cigar room as part of the restaurant. Holds about 40 people and had a full bar. The minute you walked in, you could smell premium tobacco.

What I find the most ironic is that if you are smoking a cigar in a restaurant chances are you are in a smoking section. Which means that the people compaining are smoking cigarettes. Well either that or they are non smokers sitting in the smoking section but then they shouldn't complain about the smoke because they were given the option of sitting in non-smoking.

How to handle this problem. Get yourself some cigarellos and smoke those. You can pass those of as some kind of cigarette due to the size. Granted its not the same as lighting up your favorite smoke. But its better then nothing.

I remember a few years back at restaurant/bar,I lit up a cigar and a lady at table next to me asked if I minded putting out my cigar. I said not at all,if didn't mind putting out her cigarette. You should have seen the incredulous look she gave me. She didn't put hers out and I didn't mine but I sure got my share of dirty looks,LOL. X

Further to divnmyk's post, here in California, after several years of absolutely zero public smoking, you really form an appreciation when travelling out of state for the "right" to smoke indoors. I was recently in Nevada, and before I lit up, I asked if the establishment was "cigar freindly". No problem wherever I went, but I must admit I was always pleasantly surprised to be "allowed". I guess we're getting trained here in Kalifornia. It sure made the experience special, to enjoy what most folks (outside this communist state)take for granted.

Amen Ron.
My wife thinks I like taking her to Tahoe and Vegas because I like to gamble. No, no, no... I so enjoy being able to pull out a smoke and light it up and walk into/out of a casino, restaurant, hotel lobby, etc.

Hey guys,

Hate to make you feel bad, but Rhode Island; where I live has smoking areas in every restaurant/bar worth going to and that includes cigars! Off the top of my head: The Capitol Grille (probably the best 5 star in the city), America Bar and Grille, Mill's tavern (#2 5 star), Alforno's ( Billy Joel's favorite) etc.

I don't get it..?

We are lucky here in California. It's easy to figure out where you can't smoke a cigar in an enclosed public building. (except for special events or private clubs)

Everywhere.

i agree. i no longer eat in restaurants in calif. i go to vegas where i can enjoy, not only a meal, but a cigar after breafast, lunch, or diner.

as far as the morons, idiots, and downright stupidly rude people that interupt your sacred duty for apple pie, mom, country and god, to smoke a cigar, i have found the best thing to do to maintain your internal peace, is to look them in the eye and say "GO AWAY"

The town that I live in passed an ordinance that went into effect last January (or maybe the one before that I don't remember for sure) that banned all smoking in any restaurant unless there was a completely seperate area for smokers with an entirely seperate ventilation system. To tell you the truth, this did not really put a damper on things here for me, because there are not any restaurants in town that serve a meal good enough that I would want to light up a cigar afterwards. However, when on vacation, it is nice to have the option of lighting up after a good meal.

As a cigar smoker if I want to have a fine stick after a meal I will go to a restaurant I know allows cigar smoking. In Springfield Mo. there is a restaurant which is set up as a restaurant down stairs that offered the finest foods imaginable and a cigar lounge upstairs for an after dinner drink and smoke. A restaurant will not suffer any great loss if we as cigar smokers boycott their establishments because there are greater numbers of people who would not go to these establishments if they did permit cigar smoking inside the eatery. The best bet is to patronize the restaurants which allow for our form of after dinner relaxation reward them by going to them often and telling your fiends about the great food. If people go to these restaurants they will not be at the ones that prohibit cigars. Talk nice about one and it will pay off double.
