About 1-1/2 mons. ago, I bought my 2nd humi. A Savinelli Ashford Grande. Has some minor imperfections in finish, but got it on sale for $130. It is holding at approx. 70-72%. Only problem is the interior smells a little "odd". I sent an e-mail to company and they said that the interior is Beech wood. I read an article about humidors on CA website and a Savinelli was tested and they found it to have a smell caused by glues used. Now, I only have old unsmokable 'gars in it to test it out. I am a little nervous to put my good stuff in it in fear of ruining them. I have some pieces of cedar (from gar boxes) to try to fight "smell".
Has anyone had experience with this? What should I do?? HELP!!!

Eventually, it should go away.

Just give it time to break in ... the problem should volatilize and dissipate in due time.

Slim, should I take my 'gars out and keep the lid open to let it air out for a while or just ride it out? If necessary, I can re-season and start over again.

you are not allowed to use both of these words in the same thread, no less in the same post.

open it and let it air out. the smell can't volatilize and dissipate unless the box is open. the cigar box.

Had the lid open for a week. I charged the humidifiers and have been waiting about 1-1/2 weeks now with lid shut. I didn't want to wet the interior to season. (The Savinelli rep told me not to.) The humidity is just about 70% and I'm ready to put my gars in. The interior still "smells" a little. Should I put them in anyway? Do you think it will drastically affect them. Maybe I'll put my "B" list cigars in to test it out.
What do you think??

Might be better to leave the lid open for a while until the odd smell is gone. Keep the gars in the igloo until then. You can always fix the humidity.

Did you put the cedar from the boxes in there while you were seasoning it? Just a thought.

Low, toss a couple of Acids in the damn thing and you will not notice the smell anymore!!! Only joking! I would let it Vol and Dis another week or two (can't spell those Slimboli terms)!!!!!

LMAO

When the lid was open, the smell did seem to be gone. When the humi was seasoning, the smell seemed to come back. Possibly the combo of the wood/glues becoming humified?? I don't want to keep goin in circles.

Yes I did have the cedar in the box while seasoning.

What the hell kind of glue are they using!? I use titebond wood glue and spot glue only the cedar parts I need to. The titebond is odorless when dry. That is very strange indeed! The smell comes back with the lid closed because the air inside can't circulate. Now, the varnish I like has a strong odor until it's fully cured. That can take a month or more. Perhaps they varnished the box carcass to seal it and then lined it. More likely the box is made of beechwood and then surfaced with veneer and a coat of laquer. I'm seeing lots of those on the market. The color and grain are wrong. Can't say about yours. I would guess though that if you let it air out for a good while (a month?) whatever is causing the smell will fully cure.

Here's what I would do: Stick your nose in the humidor and take a few deep breaths. If it gets you stoned all is well, load the box with your best cigars. If you don't get high add more glue.

volatilize and dissipate

My wife uses those terms in reference to my occasional gaseous discharges. Would that be in a proper context Slim?
