Being new to Cigars, I've heard the term "dog rocket" used on this forum frequently. I realize its basic translation would be a bad cigar. Looking for opinions for the single most factor that would make you classify a cigar as a dog rocket.....ie. uneven burn, bitter, strong bit, no taste, bad draw, or any other etc.

as the immortal SteveS would say:

it would be a matter of personal preference. What one man would consider the a "dog rocket", another may love as an everyday smoke. The real key is to find what it is that you like or dislike, and smoke the one you like.

How did I do, Steve?

If you light up, take a few draws and say "Damn! That tastes like crap!" It's a dog rocket.

So true Tarheel. I was giving my definition. None of the ones I mentioned would I try and smoke again.
P.S. I think Steve would be proud.

If not- why the H#ll is it in your mouth- spit it out and move on.. JMHO..

*** well- on second thought.. when I was young I smoked dog rockets to repel insects while laboring
burying telephone cable in BFE Michigan! guess most everything has a purpose for someone..

Dog Rockets= 80% of the cigars sold on cigarbid.com

Now don't get me wrong, the other 20% make CB well worth it!

Tarheel ... Spiny's right, you done good ... LOL ... between you and xrundog, you've got it pegged ... any cigar that tastes like crap is a dog rocket ... and since taste varies from one of us to another, no two of us have identical opinions on which cigars are dog rockets and which are not ...

x is right on.....if it taste like crap = dog rocket. There are some supposedly good cigars that I classify as DR, but that is simply a personal preference.

Dog Rocket equals a wide and varied assortment of poorly made and cheapass cigars! While all cheap cigars are not dog rockets, if the ad in the catalog says "used to sell for 150 to 225 bucks per box during the "Cigar Boom" or "Sign of the Times and forced to liquidate" chances are it could be a dog rocket!

And while Iron Bar's statement about 80% may seem a little harsh, I am sure that there are many dog rockets sold by all cigar outlets! I would rate Thomas Hinds, Hamilton House, Lone Wolf (one of worst, because they were such a big splash during the boom-of course that splash was in the toilet bowl), JR Knockoffs, Thompson Cigars, Professor Sila, and OHMYGOD-Bad Frogs as dog rockets that I have had the displeasure to sample!

Charlie,

re: the "boom", it looks like the pendelum is swinging the other way! Some of the major retailers are lowering their prices!

CJ,
I've not seen it at my local tobacconists, which is why I buy most of my sticks from Cbid or other online retailers. Every local retailer is still living in the boom in Arizona. Considering some of the prices I've paid for high-end sticks online, most local retailers have these marked up over 100%. I still support my local shops, but only on sticks I cannot get elsewhere like Padron 64s and OpusX.

I think he's 100% full of it. I have found precious few cigars that are true "dog rockets" ... so very bad that I have to pitch it before it's smoked. The rest fall into my own categories. Basically I don't mow the yard while wasting a good smoke like a Hemingway Signature. And I don't go to a nice steakhouse with a Hamilton or a Lone Wolf. Come to think of it, I don't mow the yard with these either. Anyway I love CBID. It's given me access to try a huge variety of cigars - good, bad and indifferent - for not a lot of $$. And this forum's first class, too.

It's just his opinion. Whatever number you come up with is your opinion. That's the deal about cigars, it's your opinion what is good and what is bad.

I think Ironbar may have a more descriminating pallat than most high brows, but I do agree that you can find your share of dog rockets at cbid. I think I've tried most of them, but at least I'm not paying over a bucka stick for'm. And there have been some very pleasent surprises among the low priced lots. Thats part of the fun for me, plus I have plenty of cigars to pan off on my mooching golfing buddies.

As far as a definition, when I try one and it sucks, then age it for a few months and it still sucks, then let it sit for another few months and I still think it sucks....I define it as a dog rocket and put the rest in my garagador, and on Sat. morning I put a few in my golf bag for the aforementioned golfing buddies!

I don't agree with 5Augie5 when he says he thinks Ironbar might have a more discriminating palate than the "high-brows" here ...

a), I don't agree at all that this group is in any way comprised of "high-brows", and b), there are a great many in this group who have some demonstrably well-developed palates ...

My opinion is that in making the far-off-the-wall statement that 80% of what CBid sells are dog-rockets, what I think Ironbar has demonstrated is a less discriminating mouth ...

IMHO, Coming across cb/ci sites was the second biggest thing to happen to me since the first visit to the cigar shop. For a newbie like me, it's the perfect place to experiment and find what pleases MY individual palate. In the short 2 month span that I've been samplin, I can tell you that the onyx reserve torbusto is my fave so far and that I think the box of bootlegger figurados I've got are dog rockets. But isn't that what makes our "hobby" so wonderful? I know theres a *@$*load of cigars out there just waiting to be sampled by me. Ladies and Gentlemen, let the journey begin...uh, anyone like bootleggers? heh, heh...

Well I'm so flattered that so many of you have so much to discuss about my opinion. Thank you!

First things first though: Cully, pull your head out of your ass will you? Just while you post here OK? Thank you.

Secondly, perhaps 80-20 was a bit harsh, but there's no denying that cbid sells alot of crap. So what?! One mans' trash is anothers' treasure. I don't begrudge a person like cully for smoking Curly Heads and Ras Tafari. Big deal.

Do I have a more discriminating palette? Maybe. Probably. I've smoked enough crap cigars in my time and life is too short to smoke any more. Cheers.

Price does not always reflect if a cigar qualifies as a "dog rocket". That being said, if you have to suck so hard that your eyes implode chances are you have got yourself a piece of canine excrement. Of course all of the things you mentioned are grounds to consider one such also.

Iron Head/Pea Brain/@$#% for Brains

My post was meant to point out that you are so full of yourself. I am so sorry your Kmart closed and your out of work, but, this is not the way or place to try to regain your self esteem.

People like you that are so full of themselves are so ignorant to the extent they cannot perceive how STUPID they sound with their unthoughtful, shoot from the hip, comments.

Enough said, out of here, see you all next week and look foward to reviewing Pea Brains next six days of thoughtless comments when I return.

If you want to understand the concept of dog rocket at a primal level which transcends language go downwind and spark up a Victor Sinclair.

If it tastes like canine projectiles to you, then it's schnauzerwurst.

Trade it with someone whose taste is different. If it is notoriously bad, package it carefully and ship it to Rickamaven so he can Acidize it.

Guys, a dog rocket is purely a personal thing. My dog rocket may not be your dog rocket. Here's how I define it -- a dog rocket is a cigar that I would rather give away than to smoke myself. Notice I said, give and not trade. Because they are, IMO, so bad I couldn't accept anything in exchange for them. The primal example of the dog rocket to me is -- Espinoza.

Victor Sinclairs are fuggin horrible. The Sinatra is terrible too. I have smoked a dog rocket or 1000,and i do believe it is a matter of opinion. There are some though (very very few) that are a matter of fact. Some expensive cigars are terrible and some cheap azz cigars are great. Majorly subject to interpretation.

If you say "I think i'll put out this stogie and go help my wife with the laundry", then you know it's a rocket!!
