I am warmed by your spirit of open debate and dispute, Charlie.

When did the U.S. become a totalitarian state in which no one can disagree with the government party-line? Iraq sucks, but that doesn't lead everyone to the conclusion that we have to bomb and invade. I think going to war is stupid, with the economy in the tank and all that. How could that possibly make me an ally of Iraq? (Note: Iraq was our ally for years, so this enemy stuff is new).

There is a thing called 'neutrality.' That's why every conflict doesn't send the world into war.

This reactionary stuff is really scary. Do some soul-searching, Charlie, and try to accept that you live in a free country and that other countries are autonomous nations, not subsidiaries of the U.S.

I do not want war!!! But if we must fight to disarm this threat, then so be it! I guess we could wait until Sadam gasses Isreal or Kuwait and then move on him! That would certainly be a smoking gun!

Glad you don't want war!

But, a real question: where does this end? Why only Iraq? Why not North Korea? Or Pakistan? Or China?

I really question this president's obsession with Iraq. It is an obsession the american people don't share. Why is Iraq, this little peon country far away, suddenly being treated with more aggression than the Soviet Union ever was?

I really don't understand, after all the rhetoric, I really don't understand.

i think you understand but are having a hard time accepting what is going on.

make believe you are a citizen of brazil or portugual or italy, countries that we dojn't hate and that do not hate us. now take a look at what the usa, this foreign super power is advocating. listen to your own countries news and read your own countries papers.

what kind of perspective would you have?

JR,

Iraq is hardly a little peon country. They got heap big time, mucho petroleum reserves. Certainly Saddam Hussein is the embodiment of evil but let's get real-- his military clout is relatively impotent. Of the threats to U.S. interests Iraq wouldn't make the top 10 list. He is the Middle Eastern Noriega, a former American puppet that cast off his stings. Our government's view is that such people need to be replaced from time to time with fresh puppets.

That also answers your other question: "Why not North Korea? Or Pakistan? Or China?"

We gave Saddam enough rope after Desert Storm.
He used it to hang himself.
They (Iraq) have refused to abide by the cease fire agreements from that conflict. Political and economic sanctions have not worked.
Why must we compare them to N.Korea et al? We need to right this ship immediately and Iraq is the obvious target. The US and our allies have provided ultimatums. Iraq has ignored them all.
This isn't a game. It's not fun to propose enormous loss of life. But the stakes are high.
This is not at all like the cold war with Russia. Russia was a world power with much to lose. Saddam would gladly lose millions of Iraqi's to achieve his goal. He is therefore more dangerous.
Be objective when you object to the war. Don't blindly cry for peace when a lack of action will potentially (likely) lead to even greater losses.
Supporting our President and our Country is far from being a war monger.
Peace is the goal. This war is simply the vehicle to assure it.
