Cigar cutter advice

I recently lost a cheapie, black double bladed cutter (the same one they sell here on C-Bid in two packs http://www.cigarbid.com/...ion/lot.cfm?lotID=91415 )

So..now I'm in the market for a new cutter. Are any of the pricey models significantly better than the double bladed guillotine like the one linked to above? The Zino Davidoff, or the Xikar series?

Anyone...help?!

Thanks

Xikars are great. Wonderful customer service. If the cutter gets dull you can send it to them and they'll sharpen it. The best cutter I've ever used though is the Swiss Army Knife Cutter.

if you register the warranty for the Xicar online, they send you a free leather pouch for it.

I purchased a Xikar over a year ago and it's still in perfect condition. I cut at least two cigars a day with it. I do put a drop of oil in it once every four months. If you buy one, go the the Xikar website and fill in the warranty information. They will send you a free leather case.

Love My Xikar,

Is the only difference between the Xi and the Xi2 the plastic versus metal handle? Are the blades the same?

I own the Xikar cutter and punch. You can't go wrong. If you're going to spend a lot of money on a premium cigar why would you use a cheap cutter on it?

I never received my free leather case, even though I registered.

A new cutter I recently won has been working really well, it's called perfect cut, and it does deliver a great cut. We'll see how long it keeps producing "perfect cuts"....

Thanks for the info Danny. I just registered mine so we will see if I get the case.

I don't have a lot of experience with cutters. I had just been using the cheapos. I traded on a different board and got a Xikar X1 I believe. I love it.

Yeah, Rick - teeth are great and can be used. As a matter of fact, I believe that I have done that a time or two myself.

I have tried many different shapes, sizes, and styles, however, the best cutter IMHO is the Xikar - by far!

Regards,

I have the Prometheus cutter I won here at Cbid, and it's cutting as good now as when new.

Xikarl is a good cutter with an occasional bad cut. The Xikar2 with the plastic body are IMO,a cheap imitation of the metal body Xikar.
My preferance is the Zino single guillotine metal body cutter. I've never had a bad cut and it's very compact. X

I used to use a cheapie double bladed cutter but have since been swayed to the dark side. I now use a cheapie
punch except on pyramids and torps.

I have a cheapie guillotine, punch and lighter all purchased here in every desk, glove box, and shaving kit. Even in my sons baseball bat bag just in case.

Agree with everyone above, and though I've tried my teeth, punchers, V cutters, scissors, knives and a paper clip, I love my Xikar.
For a nice cut especially for a Primo...it has to be my Xikar...great warranty too( see their website).
In fact, thanks for reminding me, I'm in the market for another one...for a spare.

I've got a SAK, a Zino, and a Xikar Xi. Personally, they all work great. The Zino and the Xikar will produce a perfect cut ever time. With the SAK it's easy to get a ragged cut if you aren't steady. I use them all but like the Xikar best, but probably for aesthetic reasons.

Although I use a variety of cutters for various sizes and moods, one I enjoy is an odd thingamagig I bought online: the Dr. Cutter, which is an electric cutter that makes a very precise, surgical cut. And no bits of tobacco or wrapper hanging on the end after cutting. Definitely a gimmick, but it does work very well.

I've got a Zikar, Stackhouse and a Ricks.

The Zicar is Ok but was expensive, $55.00. I get a rounded cut from it sometimes on larger cigars and it won't handle anything much larger than a Padron 3000. It mostly stays at home. To me it's more of a novelty.

The Stackhouse is a good no frills $9.00 cutter. Cuts straight and true everytime and handles everything I cut nicely. It stays in the console of my pickup and gets used on trips and bowling nite.

Ricks was gifted to me by Rickamaven over a year ago. It is the plastic disposable razor type and has the name Ricks on the side. Haven't got all the use out of it. I keep it at work.

Can't go wrong with the Xicar... have the redwood handle and it has a really weight and feel when cutting a cigar... just hope I never cut my finger off when I'm playing with it in my pocket... or cut something else off! LOL

Law, have several different kinds of cutters from single blades, sissors, to the one mentioned that you lost out on and many others, some gifted to me and others bought. Xikar makes a great one and always stood behind by Xikar Customer Service. The inexpensive one mentioned is great for your travel or in car, etc.. and $6.00 for 2 is hard to beat.

Adam, lady and gents-

Just to throw my 2 cents in...

I have used: 1 blade, 2 blade(Xikars and generics), v-cuts, punches, cigar scissors, regular scissors, teeth, knives, and anything else sharp that was handy when I was trying to "cut" my cigars (I even used the mouth of an open can of beer once)...but IMHO the best cutter I have used is the SAK. I have been using it for only about 3 months, but it cuts tobacco like butter. The only ragged cut I have had so far was when I sneezed during the cutting operation.

Which SAK cutter is everyone reving about? The ones I see on CI are in a folding knife. Is that the one or do they make just a cigar cutter??

Well...I am seriously considering buying the Xikar. But now the question is...which one the Xi or the Xi2 (the Xi3 isn't my thing--not worth the money) Does the Xi's metal body have a noticeable advantage over the Xi2?

Got a Xicar over a year ago, got the leather pouch too. The thing cuts like brand new still and it's fun to have your friends stick thier fingers in there when they are drunk. Just clean the blade after each finger, the cigars will taste funny if not done properly.

BIGBLUEDRUMMER, I resently lost ANOTHER cutter! I went to a punch cutter I had. I use it a lot now. I've replaced my guillotine cutter, but use the punch.

Ive tried the swiss cigar knife cutter too! It has a very good quality feel & makes a beautiful cut. Claims to do thousands of cuts & stays sharp!

Yeah yeah yeah! igot you colibris and your Xicars, but I don't use em!! Nope! just a rusty old spackling knife..The residual acidic and probably poisonous dried up paint, acetone, puddy and rust adds to the earthy and woody flavor of my Partagas Black Labels.

Just lay the gar on the workbench and give it a wack and your all set!

SAK vs Xikar:The SAK is way cool for outdoor/camping and such as you have a decent ? poket knife, bottle opener and can opener right in your pocket + a usable, almost perfect screwdriver to adjust that the finicky lighter.I have the plastic Xikar and love it,also Xikar is limetime Guaranteed for sharpening.
I'd buy both...

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I just wanted to update everyone on what I decided on. I bought a Xikar Xi1 cutter in titanium, and my initials are getting engraved on it. Pretty snazzy huh? I expect it to come in next week.

An exchange student from the DR, laughed at my cutter, hand then showed ne how she moistened the cap with her mouth and sucked the cap off. We will be married in 2 weeks:-) God I LOVE that girl:-) She smoked cigars too :-) Wouldn't trade her for all of the cutters in the world :-)

Xikars are great cutters..You really can't go wrong..I also have one of those desktop DR Matchless electric cutters (Very cool) but IMHO no one here named the best cutter available: Palio!...I used to swear by Xikar but when I used a friend's Palio (also has a lifetime warranty, same as Xikar), I was very impressed...I've had mine for about a year and it's perfect!...Doesn't "grab" like Xikars sometimes do, causing a small tear in the wrapper...I haven't had a bad cut yet with my Palio!

personally i prefer a band saw over a radial arm saw, it makes a cleaner cut and the cigar doesn't go flying out the back of the saw.

buy a box ofempty cartridges. the ones i bought from a gun shop cost about five bucks or less for 20. the cartridge is 2" long and about a drop less than 1/2 " in diameter.

the cartidge says, well it doesn't really talk, but stamped on the bottom is: r p 45-70 govt. i'm sure they have different sizes. sharpen the edge with your dremel or a belt sander.
