Do any of you guys/gals have periods where you seem to lose all (at least most) of your ability to sense the taste and aroma of cigars? I seem to be going through that for the last few days and it is driving me nuts. Do not have a cold or sinusitis which might explain it. Nothing worse than firing up a good Fuente, Padron or Bucanero you know is really good and getting zippo in return. Like smoking a rolled up dishrag! A waste of a good stick, not to mention the investment.

Before lighting up...suck on a frozen Popsicle and then rub some Vick's Vaporub under your nose...and use a kerosene lighter too!

smoke some cheapies for a week or 2. if you dont have any, send me your snailer and i will send you some classic cheapies.

if after a week or so, the cheapies all taste alike, smoke one premium cigar.

if you can't tell the difference, smoke the el cheapos,

T-berry,
I used to have this problem and a friend suggested that I use an alcohol based mouthwash after every gar. It has helped out enormously. The tar and nicotine that collects on your tongue will literally kill your taste buds and it takes a cpl days for them to regenerate to the point where they can taste anything. The alcohol in the mouthwash will dissolve the tar and thus out into the sink it goes. I have also noticed that I can pick up on more subtle flavors in cigars now also! Happy smok`n dude!!!!!!

rck....
Now that is a fabulous suggestion, thanks mucho.

No offense to E-Chick and RM those were very scientific (not to mention entertaining) suggestions as well. I may leave out the Vaseline, but am a big popsicle fan:)

Turnberry,
I couldn't agree with you more. I have often experienced this effect. I'm sure it's me and not the cigar because when it happens I put down the expensive stick and smoke something else that's cheap and strong. Then I've found that the next day the lifeless smoke has come alive again. This has happened many times.

I used to think that my taste system was defective but now I've come to realize that it's not unusual and something that I'll just have to live with. I'm glad that reviewing cigars is not my profession.

Try having some cheapies laying around or better yet, learn to smoke a pipe for your "bad tasting days". Get some St. Bruno Flake or Condor pipe tobacco. You'll be able to taste them even with a cold. It's referred to as that "Condor Moment".

turnberry,

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it but offhand I'd say you smoke too much. Smoke fewer cigars and most likely you'll enjoy them more. It's like eating steak every day or sleeping with the same woman.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I wouldn't think it is smoking too much, but then again that could be a relative thing. No problem for one person could be too much for me. I'm going to take a break for awhile and see what happens.

It sounds like this kind of thing happens to everybody. Sometimes I smoke on the way to work. It seems to hapen then or after a time of no smoking (2-3 days). I find that if I first get my taste buds in gear by drinking my morning coffee or eating something, I get that fuller flavor back.

I am just about convinced this dilemma is related to the increasing pollen levels. Taking no medications of any kind so that is not the problem. On those days where the published pollen count is down the taste begins to come back a bit. When it is up I might as well be smoking soggy newspaper.

This entire thread must be a horrible joke of some kind, like the hummingbirds and tennis raquets that rookie, Mean, and Crimmins came up with!

Wash your mouth out with Jack Daniels or Makers Mark, and then fire up a cigar! Enjoy
