I just bought a Tivo setup last week and it is one of the BEST things that I've EVER purchased...

I call it the eliminator.

I've eliminated all commercials, annoying newscasters, and all unwanted shows and programs.

Our TV now only show what Mike or I WANT it to, without commercials! When we've gone back to the 'watch live tv' option, we've immediately gone back to TiVo....

It's amazing...

I heard that TV is frustrated by TIVO and will start incorporating commercials into the shows. Stuff like ABC has for the soaps only more evil...

Joe: Say Bob what time is it?

Bob: Lemme look at my new watch that I got a The Watch Hut for 40 bucks...says 3pm, dang this keeps great time!

Joe: The Watch Hut? I'm gonna go there today. They have locations all over town! Let's go!

...It's gonna be THAT kind of stuff! If that becomes the "mainstream" a loud CLICK will be heard in my household! I don't watch that much TV anyway!

They are beginning to do more Product Placement (this started in movies with "The Electric Horseman") and this will make all the more reason not to watch network TV!

Tv is not that important in my life to justify cost like that.

The only reason network television still exists, is because of the advertising revenue it generates. I refuse to watch network TV. Except for 24 I might add.....;-). If television gets to that point, I'm going to sell my TV and just buy boxes of cigars in protest! Do I have any followers?!

Let them do the product placements...it still won't be as annoying as having to see the actual commercials...

I have my list programmed mainly for documentary/reality, historical, home improvement/decorating, and a few nonesense ones like The Osbournes, and Elimidate, Monstor Garage...and then there's the HBO movies and shows like Real Sex, and a few other adult themed ones...

Mike and my lists virtually mirror each other, so there are just a few that he's added that are different than mine...

The cost is a fraction of what you'd pay for a good computer setup. I use my computer for work, entertainment and personal business and have a nice, not so cheap, set up.

Mike and I use our TV in the morning while drinking coffee before work, and at night...no, it isn't THAT important to us, but as long as there's a way to markedly improve upon something that we both enjoy, well then, we're goin' for it! The cost was $349. for the unit and $12.95 per month or $249. one time fee.

Pretty inexpensive considering what it provides...

Mike also has Sirius satellite radio in his work van. LOVES it...another eliminator gadget to bring sunshine and joy to our lives...

I agree with you chick. I LOVE my TIVO. I've had it for two years and I dont think I could ever go back. It's hard to describe to people who dont have one. When I first saw commercial for Tivo I thought the whole idea was lame...pause live tv...who cares. But then I spent the weekend partying with a buddy who had one. Talk about a cool toy. I bought one the very next day. The wife, who loathes the computer, fell in love with this thing - I was a hero. Best money I ever spent.

I went out on Ebay last year and bought a home upgrade kit to increase my space. I now have enough for 90 hours. Kinda overboard but you know us guys and our toys. Have fun!

Heard on the radio this morning about Patriot Act II

If passed this will allow the government to monitor, obtain and store data on anybody using a multi-platform devce such as a TiVo. It would also include but is not limited to your PC, PDA, Cell Phone, etc.

With TiVo storing data on the shows you watch, reviewing it and making suggestions to you on similar programing, the government could use this against you and NOT in a court of law. You could be deemed a terrorist by what you watch and arrested.

Patriot Act II goes on to say that anything you do that is illegal may be considered terroristic in nature and you could be arrested.

Big Brother is getting bigger.

I wouldn't worry about TiVo reporting what you watch to the government. I've had a TiVo since they came out and there is a VERY active community of hackers who, among other things, regulary snoop what the TiVo transmits on it's daily calls. There is no data that can be used to identify you. If this changes, I expect the "hacker" community to make noise about it pretty quickly. If you want more info check out the TiVO forums at http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/

BTW, I love my TiVO, I upgraded it years ago and have just upgraded to a Series 2 model so I can use it on the home network.
