Exploding cigar?

A friend gave me an unband cigar this evening; It burned well, nice draw, plenty of smoke, and had the taste of cuban tobacco. Near the halfway mark, the cigar started to swell, and the wrapper started cracking. The more I continued the smoke, the more the cigar almost started becoming almost "egg" shaped.
Has this ever happened to any of you guys or gal? What causes this? Tasty cigar, but strange.

It's obvious - the alien was hatching, and you burned him up.

Are you sure it was a cigar?

A couple of things could have been "at work."

1. The cigar was over humidified with only the wrapper, binder, and outermost portion of the bunch at 62-68RH. If the center of the filler was still damp, it would swell as it steamed, while you smoked it. Ultimately, it would expand beyond the flexibility of the wrapper and binder and explode.

2. Again, it was overhumifified but the swelling took place because you smoked it too fast, and it heated far too quickly.

3. The person from whom you received the cigar had inserted a small piece of C-4 though the foot into the body of the cigar.

LOL at Snowolf comment.

Stere R:The idea of overhumidification is possible, but strange how the cigar burned so well for the first half, and then just started to swell. Overhumidified cigars are also usually have a tighter draw and burn irregularly. This cigar was fine during the first half. Again, tasty cigar, but strange.

emgjet: The fact that it burned well over the first half doesn't preclude overhumidification. Depending on how the cigar was stored, the open foot would have aided drying the bottom of the cigar more rapidly than the cap end. A damp cigar will not always draw tight. If a cigar has been slightly underfilled, it will draw perfectly, even if quite damp. Exploding is typically a differential expansion problem caused by overhumidification or plastic explosives.

I'm inclined to go with the C4 or the hatching Alien. I've have an Excalibur 1066 explode on me before. It was the only one out of the box that did it. I don't know why, they were all aged a year in the same humidor. I smoked the ones next to it with no booms!

Find out if it was stored vertically in a jar type humidor. Have read where jar type humidors do not humidify evenly.

Redneck1:
That is a strong possibility since he does had a few jar type humidors.
