What's the deal on these smokes? There seems to be a tone of bad PR here, but nothing specific. Are they as good as its CA rating, or just a waste of a good matchstick?

Whoops I meant CA ratings! Still bad!

Charlie

PS Jim Belushi will not even smoke them as one of his 8 to 10 cigars per day!

This is no joke ...

... I gave one to my brother when we were out fishing a couple years ago. He got about a quarter through it, and (for whatever reason) 'hurled' his breakfast over the side of the boat.

He looked at me with disgust in his eyes ... and also tossed the Lone Wolf over the side.

He honestly thought I was playing some kind of cruel joke on him ...

Wow, that bad?

So you really can't believe everything you read. I found this from CA's Managing Editor,Gordon Mott:

"Gordon Mott -- New York, NY at 09:50:34 PM EST on July 22, 1997:
I couldn't tell you exactly how many new cigarmakers were at the show--maybe two dozen?--but it was definitely more than at any other previous RTDA. I haven't tried them all yet, so it wouldn't be fair to give you a "best of" list. But a couple that I enjoyed were the Lone Wolf cigars, made by Leon Jimenes in the Dominican Republic, and Hoja Cubana, made by Nick's Cigars in Miami. Some impressive new cigars from established makers were the Felipe II and St. George brands from Felipe Gregorio and the La Aurora Petit Belicoso, another cigar made by Leon Jimenes."

Now, I'm just ROTFLOL!

Thanks for the input.

1997 is not 2003!
Leon Jimenez produced these as a top end line as the boom was coming to an end. They were a very different cigar than is currently available. It's a similar situation to the Tamboril line. When first released, they were premium, top-line cigars. As the boom ended and manufacturers saw the handwriting on the wall, a ton of Tamborils were produced and sold in bundles that had little in common with the first release.

Noticed in an old Cigar Aficianado they had a Lone Wolf Vintage with a silver border on bottom of LW band, one question what were these like?

Cannot imagine "vintage" and Lone wolf in same sentance!

Nomad,

The Lone Wolf is in the style of Romeo and Juliet but very very weak flavored. They are well made. I gave one to a friend who said they were OK if you were in the mood for a very light smoke. Try digging deeper on the boards. I think you'll find out more.

i smoke about 7 or 8 cigars a day. usually one premium. i know the difference. my income does not allow me the luxury of smoking all premium cigars.

So, does that mean you would keep these in your humidor along with your primo smokes, or just plant them outside and see if they make a good mulch?

What Steve R. said. The Lobo Rojo, which came out first, was a dark wrapper, rich, full-bodied smoke. As the boom crashed, the "sungrown's" came out and they were just another cheap bundle cigar. Not much flavor, not much smoke, but not much cost, either.

Snowwolf hit it....the Lobo Rojo was a pretty good cigar, unlike the current Signature. I have aged some of the Signature's for at least 18 months and unlike most cigars they do not improve. Kind of like smoking air....

Until I have the luxury of smoking 7-8 cigars a day, I think I'll stick to slightly higher priced sticks as my everyday smokes like my $2 El Rico Habanas, 2.40 Padron 2000s, or the numerous other cigars you can get in the ~$2 range, especially on Cbid. I get no satisfaction smoking the "cheaper" smokes as they simply aren't as full-bodied as the "higher" priced sticks (in the ~$2 or higher range) I'm now smoking.

I still haven't had a wolf, but I'm anxious to try one. Life may be too short for bad cigars, but I'll try most anything once. Besides, everytime you guys get going I'm LMAO. "Load from wolf" had me cracking up all night. My wife thinks I'm deranged.

Wer,

Just went through cheapo smokes humidor and could not find one of the rare load wolves, but I am sure someone will gladly send you one or two of them!

Wish I could, but alas, somebody done smoked all the Lone Wolfs that I had, or I just threw em away!

Thanks for the offer Charlie. 5-packs often go pretty cheap here so I may try to get some the old fashioned way (under-cutting Rickmaven by a buck) - just kidding. The potential to lose my lunch over the edge of the boat is too tempting. Cheers, Bill

RICKAMAVEN --- I couldn't possibly smoke that many cigars is one day! For me, I would rather smoke less, and enjoy it more ...

... regardless, I just can't bring myself to smoke a cheap cigar, just for the sake of smoking. I wouldn't enjoy it ...

To me ... if that was the case ... I just might as well go back to smoking cigarettes.

Is it still a LONE Wolf if you have two of them? And are they collectively Lone WOLFS or Lone WOLVES?

If you borrow one is it a LOAN Wolf?

If you loan one to a friend is he or she still your friend?
Would you would you want it returned?

These are the things which weigh upon my mind as I sip on a Guiness and puff on an Ashton. (You may not believe it but Ashtons are quite different than Lone Wolfs).

The proper term would be Pack of Wolves or wolf pack!

Still equally as bad one way or the other.

They are great to hand out to the neighbors while trimming the hedges! Despite Chuck Norris not owning them anymore, maybe he could do some info-mercials for a Stock Load of Lone Wolf's!...and have Christy Brinkley on too!

Believe it or not I remember seeing some "Wolf Pack" cigars that were seconds of "Lone Wolf" cigars. What a deal!

I didn't think they were all that bad- not great and certainly not up to their original price- but at the price you find them now they're an okay smoke.

Bigg Butt seconds could be "Passed Rockets" or "Little Butts" or "Blowing the Butts"!
