To all you master smokers out there. Pick a Q and give us your opinion... or hell answer them all. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
1. Is there really an optimal temp and humidity level to store a cigar?
2. Is it necessary to set a cigar out prior to smoking to improve the burn?
3. When a cigar burns badly, i.e. uneven, is that due to the moisture content or does it have to do with its internal make-up?
4. If you were going to make up the perfect sampler, what 10 cigars would be in it?

Hey Puff,
I'm no expert but I have done alot of research myself.
1. I have always read 70 degrees and 70% humidity, but europeans, especially the british, tend to keep their humidity closer to 65%.
2. I have had luck smoking straight out of the humidor, but if the draw is tight, leaving it in a dry box overnight, before smoking, may improve the draw. I have come across many cigars that time in the dry box improved the draw.
3. Could be both. Another culprit can be the smoker. If you smoke a cigar too fast this can happen with even the best constructed cigars.
4. It really depends on the price range. I have many smokes, that I enjoy on a daily basis. But the premiums always are calling from the humidor.
My top ten, money is no object, cigars are as follows:
1. OPUS X Belicoso the only one I have ever smoked of this line.
2. A.F. Masterpiece, I have a weakness, for all things Fuentes.
3. A.F. Anejo Shark, mmmmmmmm mmmmm good.
4. C.A.O. Anniv.Extreme that will put lead in the old pencil.
5. A.F. anything sungrown, my favorite Fuentes wrapper.
6. Perdomo squared Milenaro, got a 5 pack here reasonable, but elsewhere kinda pricey. Am smoking one as I type this, but don't do it on an empty stomach.
7. Excaliber 1066 Lancelot, Large smoke, gotta make time for this one. Goes really good with a glass of Glendranoch 15yr.
8. Ashton VSG any size, haven't had a bad one yet.
9. Indian Tabac Cameroon legend. These are new to me but a great smoke none thwe less.
10. Last, but not least, C.A.O. Crillo. Only had one of these, so I almost didn't put this one on the list, but the one I had was great.
Hope this was some help.

P.S. I am praying for our troops. Keep them and their families in yours.

1. Is there really an optimal temp and humidity level to store a cigar?

As said before ... the standard is 70/70, but sometimes hard to keep it at those marks. That is the optimal temperature and relative humidity for proper aging. Temerature is not as critical as humidity. Maduros tend to smoke best when they are 65/68 Rh ...

2. Is it necessary to set a cigar out prior to smoking to improve the burn?

No ... the cigar will burn fine, as long as it is constructed well.

3. When a cigar burns badly, i.e. uneven, is that due to the moisture content or does it have to do with its internal make-up?

Both ...

4. If you were going to make up the perfect sampler, what 10 cigars would be in it?

Perfect sampler ... too hard to say, as I have smoked many that I really enjoy. My perfect sampler would include many that are limited production, rare and just hard to find (i.e. SS, BS, WOAM, UTS, PAM, PAN, BTL, etc.) ... and many ISOM's.

To simplify the list with those that are easier to get, I compiled the list below of ones that I seem to gravitate towards ... and it doesn't include Cuban cigars.

a. La Perla Habana Maduro (especially thge Black Pearl)
b. Any Arturo Fuente Sun-Grown (especially Montesino)
c. Oliva 'O' Natural or Maduro
c. Bucanero (any)
d. La Aurora Preferidos (Natural or Maduro)
e. Cupido Toro Negro
f. CAO Brazilia (any)
f. Estavan Cruz Short Cruz (or any EC Maduro)
g. Mayorga Maduro (especially the High-Octane)
h. Perdomo Estate Seleccion
i. Padron 5000 Maduro (Padron 1964 Anniversary Series)
j. Diamond Crown

It was very hard for me to decide ... and as you can see, I am partial to Maddies!

Agree with Slim's answers to the Q's. Since I like Maduros, I have a Maduro Humidor, and try to keep it at 65-69 RH range.
List, pretty much similar to Slimboli, but pull the La Aurora and replace with Onyxn Reserve Mini Belicoso, Pull the Mayorga and substitute Partagas Black Label (any)
and pull the Diamond Crown and substitute with the power house of cigars-Joya de Nicaragua Antano Robusto (do not drive while smoking this or operate any equipment)!

Slim - On your list of favs

When the Padron 5000 Maduro become part of the '64 Anniversario line ? The 5000 is a wondeful $5 cigar - but I don't think it carries the PAM identifier , nor the price tag.

docrks --- they are indeed two different lines, and my intention was to mention them both.

Because they are both Padron ... and both very good ... I put the two under the same number (cheating a little on the 10 cigar limit), because I couldn't decide between the two.

I guess I could have made it a little clearer, and said ... (and the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series).
