Consistency in a Brand - Thoughts?

I just smoked a second Perdomo Cabinet Reserve X and was a bit disappointed. The first one was awesome - all kinds of neat flavors and the smoke even smelled great. The next two were "just a cigar", kind of flavorless and unimpressive. I don't mean to pick on the Perdomo, as I've had this happen with a few other brands.

Before the questions start, the cigars in question came from the same "batch" and were stored in my humidor for about the same amount of time at 70/70.

I'm just curious if you all have noticed this too. I guess it's part of the mystique of cigars, or maybe just bad QC???

I've seen some other posts about Perdomo QC. As for me and my house, I will buy from Nick... I have had no problems. From time to time, I see issues with a number of different vendors. I've even seen that with the famed Opus X. I'm not sure if some of it isn't taste buds at the time. Should be considered at least.

kind of day, mood, diner, weather, oh that's a wife's excuse for avoiding sex.

i guess it's the same for similar cigars.

A famous cigar seller is famous for saying "Your best cigar and your worst cigar may be lying side by side in the same box."

Just to be clear, and fair to Nick Perdomo, this is a trend I've seen with many brands. I've had enough different Perdomos of different types that I'm sold on the brand. I was just disappointed after having one of the best cigars I've ever smoked that I couldn't find another one that tasted the same from the same bunch.

Roller #47 had a fantastic batch of leaves. Roller #12 had a not so great set of leaves. Roller #12 rolled 25 cigars but one had a bad wrapper and got tossed. Roller #47 had an extra cigar rolled so they stuck his extra in the box to make an even 25. You smoked a gar from a slightly better batch.

I like Perdomo's stuff (not so crazy about 'The Cigar') but the square variety are great, as are the cheapy wheels we get here on cbid. Have had some quality varience too but I expect it from a sub-$100 box of cigars. I really wouldn't like it from a box of Monties or OpusX.

Consistency varies on many cigars. Stipulating that the cigar has been properly cared for, I've never had a bad LGC, Punch, HDM or Ashton. Those brands, in my experience, are very consistent.

EGRUFF,
I've noticed the same thing many many times on virtually every cigar that I've smoked. I blame it on me and my nose. When it happens I just put the cigar down and smoke something cheap. Then I go back to the expensive one on some other day. I used to think that this was a defect in my "tasting apparatus" but several other smokers have made remarks similar to yours. Try putting the dull smoke aside for another day. Keep it in good condition and try it another time. Then let me know if you've found that it has mysteriously awakened.

You know...I put a bunch of Sinatra's to rest a year or so ago. They were definiitely on my "c" list.

Lit one up the other day and it actually didn't taste so bad. Good day for the nose or good day for the cigar. Either way....came out better.

These ran really inconsistant..even in wrapper color and feel.

hummmm ... dunno whether it's luck or what, but my experience with Perdomo has been a consisently good one ... they've got some stuff I have yet to try, but the La Tradicions, the Cuban Parejos, GCCs, Dos Rios, The Cigars and FRWs that I've tried have been as consistent as any line ... sure, I've had a burn problem or two and a couple of disappointments, but I can't name a line where that HASN'T been the case ...

Fuente, CAO, Camacho, LGCs are also lines I've found to be consistently good ...

Whereas I've had a bad gar or two from just about every make of cigar I have tried. I don't think I've ever had a Padron that tasted off or had a burn problem. BTW,I can't remember one that was underfilled either. X

I've heard said, if you want to re-paint your car, don't have it done on Mondays or Fridays. The logic was on Monday the painters would be too hung over from the weekend, to do a good job and Fridays they would be to hurried trying to get off work. Wonder if same holds true for cigars.

As for the consistency, it's one thing to get "normal variations" because the cigars are made from natural ingredients.
But the quality should not suffer from stick to stick.
The Perdomo Estate line is not inexpensive. I would expect each one to be as high quality as the next, even if there is variation.

Somebody mentioned the Sinatra brand. This is a good example of a very inconsistent cigar. The first two boxes of the My Way that I purchased way back when were fantastic. Since then, it's been hit or miss. to the point that I won't buy them anymore.

When I was told this, they were referring to the deep discount national paint shops, not the local auto body/paint man that is getting paid for his talent and consistancy. Could not the same be true of one roller, versus, another? One work ethic, versus, another in the same workplace. I think it is something we have all seen.

Update, I just got a 5 pack of Perdomo 2, for $7.00 will gladly take a chance of some inconsistancy for that price.

In my experience, CAO's are very consistant in quality and draw.

Draw to me is an important consistant quality, after taste. I dont like it when the same cigar has different draws.

Padrons, in my experience are also very consistant. To me, Indian Tabacs have been very consistant too, also Las Gloria Cubana.

Thats 4 of my brands. I could give others, but its getting late. Goodnite all.
