Martin Savidge of CNN, embedded with the 1st Marine battalion, was
talking with 4 young Marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN.
He had been telling the story of how well the Marines had been looking
out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to tell
about the many hardships the Marines had endured since the war began and
how they all look after one another.

He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their commanders
and they could use his video phone to call home.

The 19 year old Marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his
platoon sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home
whom he had not been able to talk to in three months. A stunned Savidge
who was visibly moved by the request shook his head and the young Marine
ran off to get the sergeant.

Savidge recovered after a few seconds and turned back to the three
young Marines still sitting with him and asked which one of them would
like to call home first, the Marine closest to him responded with out a
moments hesitation "Sir, if is all the same to you we would like to call
the parents of a buddy of ours, Lance Cpl Brian Buesing of Cedar Key,
Florida who was killed on 3-23-03 near Nasiriya to see how they are
doing."

At that Martin Savidge totally broke down and was unable to speak. All
he could get out before signing off was "Where do they get young men
like this?"

As a Marine 61-65 active duty this letter does not surprise me at all. That is the way it was when I was active and this is the way it will always be, Semper Fidelis. JonR

JonR, thank you for serving your country sir. I'm 44 and was too young at the time. When I turned 18 in fact, they had just suspended the draft. When I was 21, they reinstated it. But it was required for 18 and 19 yr old to register, and then the next year when you turned 18. I was in a very narrow window of individuals who never actually had to even register. I don't discount the contribution of those who did and were drafted, or those who volunteered. I think it's a very noble choice. My little brother just retired from the Navy. He joined when he was 18. They screwed him up pretty good with lack of competent medical care, but that's another story. George Orwell said, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." I believe truer words were never spoken. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

As a devil doc that proudly served with 1st MARDIV and 1st FSSG, this is a story born out of regularity. These guys and gals will go above and beyond for each other...my life is in your hands and yours in mine...

It is too bad that we have to loose such fine young men and women because of an evil POS like Saddam. May he burn in Hell.

I have spent days/hours trying to locate the video footage of this... and this is what I have found
http://www.snopes.com/glurge/savidge.php

Although... my Nephew somehow some reason did get to phone home the other day/night the exact day that RDC posted this... and Now I am an Uncle Again.. it still sucks that this didn't happen...
although we will never know...
I am going to keep searching for clips from Leventhal and Oli' North... this is where he was before...
