Hey folks, I have bought the typical box chest humidor and have not had good results keeping the 'gars' in prime smoking condition due to inconsitent humidity. What type of humidor do you folks use and why. Thanks!!

I have 2 top end humidors and have a difficult maintaining 70/70 in the winter months. I took a tupperware container and lined it with sheets of cedar that are in cigar boxes and it works great in all seasons. Sometimes the humidification indicators are not accurate leading you to suspect that the box is not maintaining. The true test is too feel the cigars. If they are hard and smoke like a rope then you have a problem.

Remember there is a reason they call it relitive humidity. In the winter I keep my house pretty cool, so I have trouble keeping my humidors higher than 65%. I have about four big chest humidors and one coolerdor. I have found the best humidification device to be the Paradigm humidifiers...they are expensive but they work (between 59 and 90 dollors each depending on what size....the small one ($39.00)is worthless. I also have digital hygromters in all my dor's....the analog suck and are very inaccurate. If my relitive humidity goes below 60% I will just add another passive humidifier to my dor for a few days (I keep my old credo's on hand for that). I check my dor's about every other day and adjust accordingly.
When considering a humidor it is imperitive that it's lid have a tight seal.....if it too loose it will leak humidity big time. How much time should you invest in getting this all just right??? Well that depends on what you have invested in your cigars.....I got way too much invested in mine (see the trades board for what I'm liquidating). Good Luck. Mark C. (Nashville, TN)

Did you "season" the humidor before using it?

Thanks for the help. I did a little research on seasoning and it seems to be the best answer yet. How often do you season the humidor. Obviously when the humidity no longer holds, but is their any secret to how often other than this??

In my experience if you season the humidor once and then keep the humidification going with cigars in it, thats all the seasoning it needs. I live in Utah and until I got the right humidor, I found it very difficult to maintain 68-72%. Now, I refill my credos weekly and have had no problems, and very smokable cigars.

I have forced warm air heat & live in New England so we have trouble keeping anything humid. During the heating season I add a plastic film canister with a strip of new sponge. I fill it with distilled water as needed. The sponge works like a wick & it increases the level. I also find digital humistats to be better than analog.
