Robby, on the cheesecake thread you said you are on Atkins diet. Hard to tell when you're kidding but if you are I wonder if you'd mind sharing your experience with it. Have heard about it for years, also have heard medical types say it's unhealthy.

Well, this discussion evokes passionate arguments on both sides of the issue... I've been doing Atkins or some form there of for about 10 months now. For me personally, it's been a God send... I have type 2 diabetes. As long as I keep my weight down and get marginal exercise, my blood sugar stays "normal". I was eating Lean Cuisine, and generally not taking in many calories, but not at the weight I needed to be. I'm about 5'11" and I was pushing 200. I'm about 179 now. At 200, my blood sugar was also pushing 200, not good... With high sugar, you risk heart disease, no lead in the pencil, feet fall off, kidneys shut down, etc... It's horrible! but in my case, treatable, just keep the weight down :-) So I tried the Atkins. For me, it's been wonderful! My weight has come off, my blood sugar is way down, AND my cholesterol is down... It's a myth that the Atkins is bad for your cholesterol, the converse is in fact true, the same bio-chemical condition that causes you to loose weight (Ketosis) prevents the high cholesterol diet from actually giving you high cholesterol. It sounds weird, but the book says it, and I have observed it with my own tests...

Downside? It's hard not to eat carbs. Everything has carbs! I eat eggs, cheese, and meat. Outside of that, I have celery with my dinner (roughage), and take a soluble fiber pill with my daily supplements. You have to take vitamins if you're on the Atkins because you're not getting enough from your food. It's hard at first, but when you've done it for a month or so, it's easy. Also, this diet reduces your appetite. After you’ve been on it for a while, you loose much of your hunger.

For me, it's a lifestyle now. High protein, low or no carbs. Additionally, the news media has recently come out with a number of reports on the beneficial effects of such a diet. Every 2 months or so, I take 3 or 4 days off. Pizza! Candy! Ice cream!! Other than that, I'm very strict with it and recommend it highly.

I agree with Robby.

I was on the Atkins diet several times and lost over 50 pounds both times. It is a great thing! My problem is that after I lost the weight I didn't alter my eating habits permanently and gained the weight back a little at a time. This is the only "problem" with the diet. It really isn't a diet, but a life altering lifestyle change. If you do not change your lifestyle permanently you stand a chance of regaining the weight back.

The good news is that I am in the process of getting gastric bypass to help with my weight. I have completed all my paperwork and am waiting on the insurance company to approve the surgery. As overweight as I am and the fact that my family has a history of diabetes and heart problems I shouldn't have a problem being approved. The other good news is that my surgeon has never lost a person doiing the type of surgery that I will be getting. There are several different variations of gastic bypass and the national average is one death out of 200 operations. My guy has been doing this and only this for the past 20 years, so I am vey comfortable with him.

I can't wait to do many of the things that I was able to do back in high school and college. I used to play college basketball, but haven't picked up a basketball in 5 years due to my weight. I can't wait to be able to play again, participate in basketball tournaments, 3 on 3 tournaments, leagues, etc...

Anyway, I apologize for highjacking your thread. I just wanted to give you a second perspective on the Atkins diet and an alternate to the diet if you are as overweight as I am.

Thanks guys. I will read up on it. It's a little scary to imagine life without cheesecake and beer but these things do have their downside.

Goodluck with the op Hoagie.

Robby,

I have a cheesecake mix that is carb free. Let me know if you are interested and I'll send it to you. I believe it is a chocolate cheesecake mix.

Also, would you be interested in some deer jerky? Not to brag or anything, but I do make some mean deer jerky. My wife has been after me to make some, so it wouldn't be a big deal if you want to to send some too.

Later,
Matt
