I know that analog hygrometers really aren't the greatest, but I just got mine and I have a question. I wrapped it in a wet cloth and let it sit for 30 minutes. It read 70% humidity. Does this mean that I should just add 30 points to my humidity reading, or should I try the wet cloth trick again? Maybe the salt test and if it comes up 45% or so, then I know its just 30% off???
Thanks guys.

Salt test. Do it twice. Same reading, keep the hygrometer. Different readings..take it back.

Every analog that I've ever seen is adjustable. There is probably a slot in the back for you to insert a small screwdriver. (Yes Robby, I said slot AND insert in the same sentence!). Do the salt test to get 75% humidity and then use the screwdriver to adjust the hygrometer to read 75%

Oh, I didn't notice that this is referring to an analog hygro. Yes, it should be adjustable. It's basically a coil of wire in there. The tension should be adjustable. The problem may be that it's sprung. Of course, I never consider it a problem when I'm sprung...

IrishGrad, if there is no slot, you may have to take the back off. Pops right off. For adjustment, what you are actually doing is rotating the entire mechanism to align with the proper number on the face. Adjustment is easy! It's accuracy and reliability that is in question.

Guys,

There is not a slot to adjust my hygrometer, nor is there any way to open it up as I can see. It is circular, 2" in diameter with a gold and glass face. The back is magnetized, with a silver backing and five small holes in a star arrangement. I see no way to slide something in, and those little holes barely fit the point of a knife. Any clues?? I just finished my salt test. It came in at 50%.

If you are certain it cannot be adjusted, exchange it ... or get a digital and either keep the analog for show or get rid of it ... my 2cts

Thanks guys. The hygro is now in my humi which is fully broken in and now states that I have almost 70% humidity. Clueless... May need a digital...
Rick, thanks for the smokes. I am very appreciative. As soon as I can get myself together and I have a few extras, I'll let you know and send you some.

Cheers,
