We all know that cigars can vary from lot to lot. Even the best super-premiums will have variation.
Assuming the cigar company makes the cigars in the same facility, from the same type of leaves from the same individual farms, the flavor should be fairly consistent.
But we all know that crops from the same seeds on the same farms can vary from year to year. Hence, the limited production Vintage cigars that manufacturers make.
But, like a decent wine, shouldn't all cigars be stamped with a vintage, or at least a "born on date" or something?
I realize that cigars differ from wine in that wines often utilize a single variety of grapes from a single vineyard, while a cigar will be made this year with leaves from years past.
But knowing that, isn't it true that certain batches of cigars will yield superior flavors than other batches produced at different times??
In this day and age where even our soft drinks have a date on the label, couldn't we get the same information from the best cigar companies?

Cuban cigars continue to have the boxes dated and coded to identify in which factory they were manufactured. Occasionally, you'll find cigars produced in other countries that are box dated, but it's rare. One can only assume that manufacturers don't want you to know when they were made because releases do differ.

Wines have very restrictive rules that vary from each country and region as to what MUST be on the label. I.E. It can't say Napa Valley Merlot 1999 if more than X % is from another AVA or has over X % other verital and all must be from 1999 vintage.
Seems cigars makers mix and match fillers, binders and wrappers from many sources and years. I'm sure the info is available but is probably considered proprietary?

That's my point.
With wine, it's not unusual to find a favorite only to be disappointed with the same bottle from a different year.
I feel the same may be true with cigars. Sure, aging is critical, but perhaps some of the differences we experience are actually based on WHEN it was made rather than how long it has been stored.
