Anyone else here getting 'creeped' out ...
1. Author: SlimboliDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 10:54AM EST
... by all these 500 post threads?

I received an email recently from someone who shall remain unnamed ... for privacy reasons. But, I couldn't agree more ...

"You know Slim, I've always had an irreverent view about cigar boards. They seemed like small oasis of camaraderie & cheer in a tumultuous world but not to be taken too seriously. Only recently have I begun to realize the importance of the bonding that takes place at cbid and the need for a semblance of order and
respect for the bylaws. There are quite a few warm, passionate, and intelligent people like yourself who "reside" there. I felt bad for Ram and the others when they were being slammed at first but now I am perplexed by their time-consuming (and band sapping) long-winded threads, which are mostly full of fluff and self-aggrandizement.

It's odd to me. I will be gradually distancing myself from this nuttiness. Are they trying to make a statement? *** said that they were from Cigar World & that they thought we were snobs and should be brought
down a peg or two...

However, they are quickly turning me off with their incessant nonsense. It's almost like being sober around drunk/stoned partiers - funny for a while and
then very tiresome."

This is just a legitimate observation folks ... and should not be taken personally. I hope the author of this email is not upset that I posted this on the forum ... but this one was not the only one that was brought to my attention ... and also this one was by far ... the one that was most eloquently portrayed.

Can you say clique?
3. Author: MACSDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 10:58AM EST
Well, to be quite frank, I thought they were a bit silly myself, so I don't even open those threads.
4. Author: BuckwheatDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 10:59AM EST
Yep.
5. Author: ryanpedersonDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 10:59AM EST
I don't open them, but don't think of them as anything more than people not having anything better to do. Perhaps they think its funny? Oh well, not hurting me - but they do clog up the boards a little.
6. Author: andytvDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:03AM EST
Doesn't bother me.....I only open the threads that I am interested in so I usualy leave those alone.
7. Author: snowqueenDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:09AM EST
Well, at least we don't constantly put people down on the 500 threads. No racism, no back stabbing, no nasty name calling, just go ole fun. Now if anyone doesn't won't to join in on the 500 thread, it's ok, guys, you don't have to, you can just pass it by.

Why feel you have to pick on people? Are we bothering you? In a word no.

Now Slim, you have a great day!

Thank you Andy, that's the way it should be, if you don't like it, don't read it:)

She (Snowqueen) makes a good point, but I tend to agree with Slim, and am not going to add to them anymore!

10. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:26AM EST
I agree with Charlie. He has stopped by, said hi and moved along. He knows he is more than welcome to stop back but if your not happy there at least be smart enough not to stop and stare then complain that you don't like what your staring at. It moves along way too fast for me to keep up with but I like to stop in now and then. I see no harm at all.....unlike the religious and political threads.
11. Author: barryneedlemanDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:32AM EST
I understand your point Slim and whoever sent you that email but am probably more aligned with AndyTV. I really don't participate in those threads but do not find them offensive. The whole idea of a misc. board is to have an open forum - have fun, etc. Different people have different ideas about what is fun.
12. Author: vfrtwiceDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:34AM EST
I like it here... many have left.. but i will stay! I really miss those that left.. and visit them on occasion. I had a late friend say to me once.. "you know keith.. all things fade"
trends may come.. odd things may come.. but they will all "fade" and the core will remain!
I have met many good people here on the boards... everyone has does their little part, and everyone is unique. I am sure many got tired of me posting pics of my most amazing lady..and im sure some had their cut downs on it... he's bragging... thats getting old.. but those that know me know different!
Things will come .. things will go.. but two things are FOR SURE.
1. we will always have Slim to keep us in line
2. We all still have our love for cigars...

and if you look at all the treads...amoung the oinks.. 500 posts.. kari picture post.....you will find a small cylindrical object that we all love and cherish...... CIGARS!!

13. Author: andytvDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:37AM EST
for a second there I was afraid you were referring to that "other" small cylindrical object that we all love and cherish (at least our own).
14. Author: dave97402Date: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:38AM EST
While I don't read em, I don't care...but...

My question would be was your post even necessary? Other than to point out what we aleady know and stir the pot?

Just curious?
15. Author: andytvDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:39AM EST
I just read some of the posts on the 500 thread, and it reads like a chatroom.

Perhaps we need chatrooms at CBid?
16. Author: lukinDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 11:59AM EST
I find them annoying, though I don't open them or really any thread that is similar. I don't know much about computers but I know that there is something called bandwidth and that it should not be wasted and it seems like a pretty big waste of space to me. Then again, to each his own. I find plenty of things here annoying, but tend to ignore them. I find that best policy generally.

Lately, I am much more concerned with the lack of cigar talk on the cigar boards than anything else. The abundance of overbidder/customer service/top ten threads etc. are much more annoying. I find that I rarely find anything of interest there anymore. Just my .02 I am sure that all of this goes in cycles though and just as one thing will have run its course, another will come along and fill its place.

Andy, you may have something there!!!
18. Author: usahogDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 12:06PM EST
I bypass like MACS said above...

"*** said that they were from Cigar World & that they thought we were snobs and should be brought
down a peg or two..."

In my opinion, this may be the crux of it. Some folks came here to this site just to stir crap and be annoying. Mission accomplished. Some of us haven't forgotten that.

However, I just ignore those threads.
20. Author: snowqueenDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 12:14PM EST
Why with all the other threads, do you guys feel the need to pick on one. We aren't bothering anyone here.

Now I will leave you all to your thoughts:)

I don't participate in those type threads, however I see no harm in them, just B/SOTL having some fun.

As far as the unnamed source of Slims post, well that's just bullc**p, if you are man or woman enough to make a statement at least be man or woman enough to put your name to it, or let the person you made the statement to use your name.

I think the best thing to do would be to let this thread fade out. Slim wanted to make a point, it was made, and now we should all move on. This thread is going nowhere except for a bad place, and by doing so, it will be taking up valuable bandwidth - which is one of the things this thread was complaining about.
23. Author: unclebDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 12:47PM EST
I don't want to let this thread die Ryan. I want it to keep going and I am going to be the 500th post. How's that for irony.
24. Author: SlimboliDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 12:47PM EST
I made my point ... and I see that I'm not alone ...

... and it wasn't done just to 'stir the pot', and it isn't just one thread either. I guess snowqueen hasen't noticed all the other 500 thread wanna-be's, and the handful of folks that are breaking the bandwidth on them to get there.

What concerns me more than anything ... is to hear of the potential that more good people are backing off posting, and even considering leaving these forums because of this nonsense ...

... anyone heard from SteveS lately? Can anyone think of any others you don't see around here anymore?

OK ... I'm done. Like I said above, I've made my point.
25. Author: J.RedlegDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 1:11PM EST
Slim, thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am a newer, active participant of the "500" posts and I will speak for myself and only myself.

As many of the members here, I "stalked" the various forums and threads until one day while e,njoying a cigar, I ventured in and began my forum discussions.

Cigarbid realizes that cigar smokers are a social lot and thus, they created a Miscellaneous board for us. In this board, members have shared their experiences that range from: trials, tribulations, recipes for both food and drink, music, arts, books, movies, health, to include gastro intestinal issues, and yes, political, social, and economic opinions.

I don't need to tell any regulars about the heated debates that have been played out on these boards. They have gone as far as an accusation that a member has taken a picture of another member from the picture boards and created a bogus profile on an online dating service!

I, for one, do not wish to participate is such debates. And thus I stumbled upon this large thread filled with other CBid members looking to share some on-line companionship without aggravation. Not that I oppose free thought and expression, it's just that I deal with enough negotiations and heated issues in my position at work.

IMO, the thread definately fits within the defintion of "Miscellaneous." It is a group of friends that welcome anyone, like myself, who comes in without looking for an arguement.

Little milestones along the way makes it a little more interesting.

The thread has resulted in some of us getting together and possibly starting a weekly herf, open to anyone willing to share a smoke, a conversation, and a good time.

I feel it exemplifies what we are all here to do: Have a little fun and talk cigars. If anyone from this board or CBid disagrees with me, so be it. It's my position and until someone from CBid tells me to stop, I will continue to go to the "Seinfeld" thread as one member calls it.

You are welcome to join us or ignore us. It is entirely upto you.

John

Don't feel strongly either way. It seemed like on odd/funny thing to do the first time. Then the novelty wore off for me.

The 500 threads are clearly marked. A person can always just move along and find something else they would rather participate in.

Most cigar smokers are mavericks by nature. They are just shaking up the apple cart I think.

If anyone leaves Cbid because of the "500" threads, they are probably just looking for a reason to leave.

Slim, I do greatly appreciate you policing the obvious decorum errors- people posting TRADES in the CIGARS & RELATED areas as an example.

I think these 500 threads are as Miscellaneous as you can get. No problem with them here as far as I am concerned.

(Wouldn't it be funny if enough people responded to this that it reached 500 posts?)

:]

Like Scrooge said.

"every idiot who goes about participating in a 500 post, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart"

Hopefully 'our' Scrooge will be visited by the ghostly BOTL and have a change of heart so he like Tiny Tim can say.....
"God bless us everyone".

Now on to 500!

!!! nicely put John Redleg, so there...
31. Author: unclebDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 5:31PM EST
I have never posted on one of these threads, but after that very intriguing and informative reply from JRedleg, I think I will have to look into these threads. Sounds like fun.
32. Author: BottomFeederDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 5:42PM EST
What makes 500 special?

Do you win a cigar?
33. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 5:50PM EST
I salute you Jredleg. Could not be put better. So Slim, lets take a recount. I just think you are upset that you can't attack me anymore because of the "grab bag" auction and now the only thing left is going after everyone one that is trying to have a little fun and enjoy the company of this site. Accept the new wave of BOTLS. We are not a bunch of old timers sitting on the porch in a rocking chair hollering at all the young wipper-snappers. Try joining rahter than chasing away.
34. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 5:51PM EST
Bottom feeder. Check it out. they have "cheating" ways of hitting the number. It is an interesting challenge. Test your computer skills.
35. Author: BottomFeederDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 5:59PM EST
Yeh, but what's the point of hitting 500?

Who cares?
36. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:02PM EST
Only the ones trying for it.....Thats the point. I don't care about it but some do. They are just having fun finding ways of beating each other out of it.
37. Author: pabloescabarDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:02PM EST
that's the point.
38. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:03PM EST
Picture 5-6 people trying to find a sneeky way of hitting that one post. It is a challenge. And along the way you practice on 50, 100, 250, what ever
39. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:05PM EST
It has NOTHING to do with cigars...but neither does farting, pictures of jets, oinks, children, etc.
40. Author: pabloescabarDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:06PM EST
only cigars & people who like cigars...
41. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:06PM EST
It is the most non contraversial thread ...up until now. Not one single fight on the 3 or so 500 threads.
42. Author: John hay CigarsDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:07PM EST
Cheers Pablo!
43. Author: BottomFeederDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:07PM EST
Aah- got it. Like a personal best...

Glaf to help, I guess.
44. Author: cigarbidwidowDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:07PM EST
And isn't it better than people trying to bash each other and take personal attacks on each other? It isn't hurting anyone and it is all in fun. If you don't like it---don't open it. Just like with anything else. If you know what the topic is and who the author is, then skip it. It isn't that hard.

Or is it like that dead animal along the side of the road... you know, the one you can't help but look at even though you know it will not be a pretty site.
45. Author: BottomFeederDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:08PM EST
That should have been "glad".

Still helping...

Sorry BottomFeeder. That was a general statement (posted at same time as yours). It wasn't meant for you.
49. Author: cigarbidwidowDate: Fri, 10/14/2005, 6:14PM EST
So should we bring that dead horse picture post up again?
