I love the continual shocked looks from my kids when they hear me play stuff new to them..... My daughter especially asks me to stop ruining music for her by showing her how much pop music today sucks.

I worked in the retail record biz for about 9 years so have a w-i-d-e variety of artists that I love to listen to. Van is certainly one of my favorites in the rock / jazz / blues category. I started this "Vanfest" when I realized there were a bunch of albums I hadn't listened to in ages or at all. At any rate, I decided to start from the beginning of his solo years and work my way chronologically.

Seen Van only twice. Once in '74 (...or was it '75?...) at the Waikiki Shell and then not again till this past October in Berkeley, CA. He's back in CA this month but saving my $$$ for Vegas in April.

I saw McCartney play at Fenway Park in 2016...fantastic show, he and the band played about 3 and a half hours, and he really put on a good show...
It was the wife's B-day, and she's a big Beatles fan...I had hero status for close to three weeks

Well, Van is 74 years old and he doesn't tour that often in the States so if you want to see him before it's too late, you better go to the closest show you can get to and not wait for him to show up in your neck of the woods. He still puts on a good show but of course, Young Van was much more vibrant and animated.

As far as other shows I've really enjoyed here in Hawaii:

Pure electricity - The Rolling Stones, Jan. 1973 - Mick Taylor's last American shows as a regular member of the band. ZZ Top opened. I went to the first of 3 shows and the energy in the place was so high while we waited for them to come on.

Of some historical importance - Jimi Hendrix, August 1, 1970 - Jimi's last American show, in 6 weeks, he would be dead

Most entertaining - Elton John in 1973. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" hadn't been released yet but Elton opened up with "Funeral For a Friend" and when he came out, with the wild outfit and great lighting, the show was non-stop. The glasses that blinked "Elton" and "John" were totally out of sight!

Stoniest - Bob Marley. Although it was an outdoor venue, there was so much pot in the air that day, I got 2nd hand stoned.

Loudest - either SRV in 1986 or Beck, Bogert & Appice in 1973. With SRV, we were sitting on the risers but at the same level as the speakers on the stage. For BBA, sat in the front row, stage right, right in front of the speakers.

changed names a few times, and a few other clubs up and down that short street, but if it was the same door as was once called the Tea Party, yes...probably not after some point in the 70's. I think it went disco for awhile and that poisoned it for me.
Don Law pre-big time owned one of the incarnations, maybe the Tea Party, or The Ark? It's all hazy.
Pretty sure I saw Johnny Winter there early 70's. Mighta been where I saw Santana...either there or at the Psychedelic Supermarket a block or two from there.
So the buildings on Lansdowne St behind the left field wall were old warehouse kinda things, were all connected, and I no longer can recall which club was which anymore...but I'm feeling the Tea Party.

as for Van, saw him once, pretty sure it was Spring 1972 +/- one year, pretty sure it was at a place then known as The Music Hall which was in the Theatre District...the area where most musicals and off Broadway stuff usually played. Caren told me I needed to come home that weekend from college in upstate NY, I did, and she said "let's go, I got tix for Van tonight".
Sadly, it wasn't blow away good, possibly the venue, possibly the drugs. But I remained a fan even though I never owned more than a half dozen albums or so.
